Ok... So, yeah. Just had my first experience with Live Voicemail. At its core, I realize it is like a 40 year rewind back in time like you are listening to your answering machine pre caller ID to decide whether or not to answer...

So modern CallerID now helps, but still leaves a huge gap... let me explain my recent situation and why this feature is now in my top 2 or 3 functional enhancements.

So, I am dealing with a flooded basement/insurance claim/remodel. I created a new checking account at a different bank just to keep things separate. I just got some framing work completed today and paid the contractors with a check from my new account about an hour ago.

Got a call from an unknown local number(that can often result in SPAM) so I did not answer it. Saw the voicemail icon pop-up on my Dynamic Island and vaguely remembered the new "Live Voicemail" was a thing and clicked it.

It was the bank verifying that I had actually written the check while the contractor was standing in front of them. Normally, that would have gone to voicemail, maybe I would have seen it today... maybe. And my poor contractor would have not gotten their money which would have at best, stressed our relationship.

Instead, I saw it was the bank talking in text, real-time on my screen and answered(which honestly startled and confused the teller...) and confirmed I wrote the check which she cashed immediately.

ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT. This will improve communication immensely. such a bigger deal than I would have thought.

Agreed . The only problem is that for the moment ( I hope it will change ) it can only work in English .

That is a great criticism which I did not know. Hopefully that changes soon and more languages are added. I also speak Spanish and am often impressed with how well Siri does in transcribing. Honestly does better in Spanish than in English sometimes and I am a native speaker...

I'm French and get messages , emails or voicemails in both languages , and don't get me started in franglais ( frenglish ? ) with the family 😂 . It's actually funny to see how French is transcribed in Live Voicemail .

hahahaha. Franglais/Spanglish or what linguists call "Code-Switching" (something that only exists in conversations between people fluent in 2 or more shared languages) is an awesome and fascinating thing.

It will be a miracle if that is EVER transcribable by anything short of insanely powerful AI. The beautiful thing about code-switching is each word/thought/etc is grammatically correct when considered with the following words in the different language. So grammatically, each language respects the other in conjugation, masculine vs feminine, tense and more.

It's why true code-switching or Spanglish, etc is virtually impossible to do unless all participants are fully bi-lingual. So yeah, lots of AI programming MIGHT transcribe those conversations correctly, but I'll be shocked if that happens.

On second thought... business idea. Calling my developer friends now. ;)

It is also only available in the US and Canada :(

The Apple article about says only English so surprising it is working in French as well.

”Live Voicemail is available only in English in the United States and Canada, excluding Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands”
