Just went to get my Sunday NY Times puzzle...

Just went to get my Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle in my puzzle app on the iPad (Crosswords). This week's puzzle is in PDF format, so it's not available in the app. Ok, so I open Safari, go to the NY Times site, and open the puzzle. It's a two-page PDF. Ok.

Can I do it online? No, and I wouldn't expect that.
Can I print it? Nope. No printing from the iPad.
Can I save it somewhere, and manipulate it from there? Nope. No saving allowed on the iPad, unless it's a jpg, or inside a dedicated app.

This sucks. Apple, make this thing more useful. Sorry I'm not a gamer.

Sounds like a very serious problem. I guess all of those people who own Android tablets are happily doing their crossword puzzles and laughing at you.
 
While it does involve apps, it took me about 30 seconds to print the .PDF of the puzzle.

1. Open the .PDF page in Safari.
2. In the address, put a "g" in front of the http:// to open the .PDF in GoodReader.
3. 2 touches to send the file to Air Sharing.
4. Print the file on my shared printer connected to my Mac.

Ouch, that's about 3 steps longer than common sense should allow...

OP, is this week the first week it's weird like that? Is it normally doable on the iPad?

Well, maybe not them (yet), but surely all those who bought the actual hard copy of the newspaper certainly are... :D

Can't save it? Do a screen shot. It will save in your photos. There are apps that will let you open that and then doodle or sketch or draw on it. I know this is a pain but certainly a work around and an easy one at that.

Btw Android SUCKS! My wife broke her iphone and I got a deal on an android and got it as a temp fix and it sucks!

The NY Times puzzle is usually available on the iPad -- this particular Sunday puzzle has special features that won't work in the Across Lite format.

I realize that's possible, but then I might as well skip the iPad and do it from the Mac. My frustration is with the needless limitations of the operating system on the iPad. It could be far more robust. Yes, the device is a smaller and lighter package than the Air, but additional OS features (and fundamental ones, at that) don't weigh a whole lot. Overall, I'm quite impressed with the iPad, and I'm getting a lot of use out of it.

I look forward to the addition of printing in a future release. Even if Apple just provides the appropriate hooks in the OS, and leaves the rest to 3rd party developers, I'd be fine with that. Oh, and maybe something along the same lines to create folders on the iPad, copy files in and out of them, and let any app access them (if the app developer so chooses.)

Yes, as somebody else said, this is the first Sunday puzzle since the release of the iPad that doesn't work in the "standard" electronic format. With an app like Crosswords, it's a pleasure to do the puzzles on the iPad. I used to do them on Palm and Win CE devices, and then the iPhone for the last three years or so. For me, the experience on the iPad is better than doing it in the paper.
 
how come you are complaining about the shortcomings of iPad, while you should be complaining about the New York Times goof up !
 
FWIW, to those lovely members being smart about the issue, if an app is designed to work and suddenly the company that delivers the content changes the game and renders the app useless (even for one day) then that is pretty crappy. I bet of Apple did this then the ones being total smartasses would be pissing themselves.

OP, it is NY Times' goof and not Apples. The ipad OS is no more or less limiting than it was on say Saturday. Let's hope they fix it asap.
