So JVC came out with a new camera to support quicktime for FCP 6
whats your take on it, do you like the idea, hate it or unsure. It seems interesting i think for most it will come down to price if the user exclusively uses FC
Before buying either the JVC GY-HM100 / GY-HM700, you better be darn well married to Apple's Final Cut Pro. Said ProHD camcorders are the industry's first in the solid state line to store files in native QuickTime format onto SDHC cards. Apple's pushing the fact that users don't have to transcode or re-wrap prior to editing, and considering that each one cam can hold twin SDHC cards, you'll be able to capture a maximum of 64GB before needing to reload. And just think, this time next year the successor will hit with dual SDXC support, giving buyers a maximum capacity of 4TB. Decisions, decisions.

That'll be a great documentary cam as the SDHC cards come down in price. It'll allow each card to be a "master tape". I'm still not the biggest fan of long gop, but at 35Mb/s the quality of the encoding should be pretty darn good.

However, it only has 1/4" chips (giant fail there JVC) and it's form factor doesn't seem quite as nice as the EX1/EX3's.
 
Don't overlook the GY-HM700

Good call on the SD card as a master tape...they are so cheap nowadays! And XDCAM/35 encoding is rather nice, anyone using the EX1 or EX3 will attest to that. Holds up very well, even for chromakey.

Don't overlook the HM700 though, which will arrive even sooner than the HM100 according to that Pro Video Coalition post linked above. It will have 1/3-inch CCDs which is great news.

Also I disagree with you on the form factor. It looks a lot like the HVX200 formfactor, which in my opinion is still better than the wrist-breaking EX1.
 
The 1/4" are a bit worrisome espeically considering most cameras in this class use 1/3" imagers (or 1/2" in the EX1/3) but we'll have to wait and see how that effects image quality once people get it out into the wild.

$4k is pretty much the sweet point price was for prosumer cameras. And I don't think there is a camera at that price point w/so many recording options and solid state media.

IMO the EX1 is still the prosumer camera to beat right now. Full raster, 1/2" sensor. Nice, full raster codec. You can use an adapter to record to SD cards instead of the much more expensive SxS cards. The EX1 can be tough on the wrist though.

I am so itching to buy this camera. I've been using the DVX 102 and a Canon XH 1A ... and the size and weight of the HM100 is so attractive. But I'm using Final Cut Express and wondering if there are codec issues when importing the .mov files from the JVC. I am afraid to assume that since it's .mov, FCE will also recognise the format. My experience with solid state media files hasn't been straightforward.

Also, when SDXC come into the market will this camera and all others using SDHC become obsolete?
 
I have the HM100 and love it, it is expensive, but the recording to SDHC and wrapped in .mov is a sure winner for mac users.

The HM100 will not work with FCE, as it does not read XDCAM codec (HM100 records to XDCAM wrapped in .mov), so if you want to use FCE, you will still have to transcode to AIC I believe. You can however view the HM100 .mov files on Quicktime by downloading a perian for xdcam codec for free.

HM100 .mov works beautifully with FCP, just drop the file in the timeline and start editing. It does suffer in low light, though not as bad as I thought, for clips with bad noise, I use Neatvideo's de-noise plug-in which works wonders, well worth the $100 in my opinion.
