There is a great debate as to whether it's needed or not. Macs can, and do get viruses and malware. Maybe being smart with downloads and websites visited is enough?

For a discussion try here for example: https://www.macworld.co.uk/feature/can-macs-get-viruses-3454926/

But regarding Kaspersky, there's this (if you can believe Wikipedia):

"In March 2015, Bloomberg accused Kaspersky of having close ties to Russian military and intelligence officials. Kaspersky slammed the claims in his blog, calling the coverage "sensationalist" and guilty of "exploiting paranoia" to "increase readership".As a result of alleged Russian involvement in the 2016 Presidential Election and ongoing investigations, the Department of Homeland Security officially banned the use of the Kaspersky Internet Security by the United States federal government in September, 2017.As of December 12, 2017, the use of Kaspersky software is banned from use by the American federal government by law."

Macs do get malware, if a user is careless. A virus is a self-replicating type of malware. There are no viruses in the wild for the macOS. Malware is the major heading, virus is a subset. Many people seem to use Virus as the major heading. It's not "just semantics" as the saying goes.* Malware, yes... virus, no.

And yes, being smart online is enough to protect your Mac.

*Actually, it is semantics, literally. The saying "quoted" is nonsense.
