I keep a few times a day get a prompt for apple ID login with a email populated that I've never seen before. I don't see any apps pending updated and it's not set to any account or function anywhere I can find.

Is there any way to figure out where in the heck this is coming from?

Who the hell is this guy? Is that some sort of scam??!!! Imagine if an app manages to prompt you with a pop up like this one asking for your apple ID: They could get to the apple store and order whatever they want with your debit card details.... and guess what this is something technically doable! I know the iOS SDK a little bit and it seems like it wouldn't take ages to implement it... On top of that, the app store remembers my apple ID and only prompts me for the password!

Scary!

So guys, until this is sorted and we know where it comes from, don't type anything in this window. Just basic security measure.
 
Do you have any iTunes songs that aren't yours? It's getting that info from those tracks as it's trying to redownload them.

nope. At the moment there is not even 1 track on my ipad as I just restored it... I'm not even syncing it with my mac: it's configured to run with icloud...

My iPhone 4s did this when I first set it up - same email address. I just put my own iTunes details in. I think it must have been missed during production and don't THINK its anything to worry about.
 
I agree with you there is probably nothing to worry about but imagine if someone manages to do something like that... everybody would fall into the trap.... I think it's general good practice not to enter your details if you don't think you should be asked.

First time I put my details in because I thought it was just the way it should be: restore-> password - ok... but afterwards, it kept asking for my details randomly... and always coming up with the same wrong address again and again.

I started questioning the whole thing when I went to the app store and tried to update something: it remembered my real apple ID and was just asking for the password, just how it should be. Even after the update, I was still asked for my details... and it was still coming up with the wrong address. It seemed like the 2 usecases were just disconnected: that could be a bug in ios or a scam.

Frankly I'd like to get my head round this before saying it's safe: to me, this is a perfect scam scenario and I'd like Apple to release an official statement about it but I doubt they will bother...
 
Check the purchased apps from the app store against what's installed on the device and see if you find one you did not purchase... Delete it

When you restore your ipad, it starts off with downloading the apps that you had in your latest icloud backup. NOTE: I had an iCloud backup because I was running IOS 5 beta before.... The problem happened when I moved to the official release.

Any idea?
 
To anyone with this problem:

Explanation: you have a song that was purchased with that unknown email address and you somehow obtained it and just can't remember when or how. But you say you don't even have any songs in the Music app. Well, iCloud restored all your apps, and it's also STILL trying to restore all the music from before. Until you enter the password for that unknown email address, it will keep bugging you with the annoying pop-up. Now what?

Solution: ignore the pending iCloud restore for now. Connect your iPhone to iTunes and sync all your music that way. Basically, you're helping iCloud to complete the restore process by syncing all the music yourself, thus not needing to enter the password for that unknown email address.

More in-depth: when you restore stuff via iCloud, you HAVE to enter password for each different account instance. When you restore via iTunes, you DO NOT have to enter password for anything. That's exactly why I back up to iTunes, restore via iTunes, and just deal with iTunes altogether. iCloud is not 100% flawless yet.

Hope this resolves any unresolved issues.
 
Hey, thanks for your response but I doubt that's the case I have to say. There is no reference to my music on the iCloud backup except if I missed something....?

On top of that, I've got very few purchases. maybe one album. All the others are personal CDs that I ripped from my personal CD library. All my songs are mp3s and expect if I missed something, mp3s don't have any locks, security or apple ids in them... so, even if I had some mp3s in the backup, I don't understand why it would ask me anything. Anyway, I'm sure your solution works but maybe not for that reason... :)
