Keep MAC pro 2009 or buy HPZ800

Hi have mac pro 2009 single cpu with 16gb memory since i need room for 3 gpus and usb 3.0 but dot have cash i was looking at used HPZ800 or HPz820. basically lots of resolve and premiere pro with bit of rendering in 3d. Are those machines to old? Thanks guys

I don't know anything about Premiere, but if you do your 3D renders with CPU, hunt for the dual processor Z800 and Z820 (or maybe Z840 if you've got the money), and do the CPU upgrades 'till the near max. There is nothing wrong with Z6xx series either, if you need a render farm and dual CPU's.

I've got one HP Z400 now, and it's a one reliable workhorse. But I still desire dual CPU's per station, and a lot more of those units.

HP ZXxx, or Z6, X8 -series if they are there someday. That's gonna be my next plan if I have to leave MacOS some day - and it's any day now, to be honest. Z8xx series are good for GPU renderings too; there are slots to use, and there are watts to waste.

Z800 is the same technology level as the cMP. The Z820 is the same technology level of the nMP. IMO I would recommend the Z820 as it uses newer technology and is not that much more costly than Z800 systems. As suggested Z600 / Z620 systems are a great value if you do not need the ultra expandability of the Z800 / Z820 platform (though with the requirement for three GPU's Z800 / Z820 appears appropriate).

If you're comfortable upgrading your systems you may want to consider an entry level system and then upgrade the processors. The Ivy Bridge processors, of which the Z820 can utilize, have come down significantly in price. Throw in a Z Turbo drive and you've got a speedy system (note the Zx20 systems require a Z Turbo Drive gen 1 card to boot whereas the Zx40 systems will boot from a gen 2 Z Turbo drive. Gen 2 is better as it's a true NVMe solution compared to AHCI. NVMe offers considerably faster performance than AHCI)

Thanks guys i am going tomorrow to get z820 workstation i would like to upgrade the cpu to 2.8 GHz Ten-Core Intel Xeon Processor with 25MB Cache--E5-2680 v2 and i alos see that they have 12-core 2.7GHz Xeon E5-2697 v2 so basilcy any chip that has V2 in it i can use on this workstation and i alos have 512gb Z Turbo Drive gen 1 card on the way

I am not aware of the need for any additional HD controllers for the Z series of systems. At least not for a basic configuration. Before I purchased my Z Turbo drive I ran mine with the standard HD controller.

Congratulations on the purchase. The Z series systems are quality systems and the eight series allows for a lot of expansion.
