MP All Models Keep Mac Pro 5,1 or get new Mac Pro or wait next Mac Pro?

I am in dilemma if i should go ahead and get new current mac pro or wait next new mac pro? I currently have mac pro 5,1 with max config - 12 core, 96 gb of ram, nvme, etc

or....

get the new mac pro now and buy the non upgradeable parts and get the upgradeable parts like 28 core cpu when the prices drop further in the future? will mac pro have long life shelf if i go this route?

or....

keep what I have now with mac pro 5,1 and wait to see what Apple will release next mac pro?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

There is no way we can help you to make the decision.

e.g.

We don't know what's your usage.

We don't know if the 7,1 can give you any benefit.

We don't know if the 8,1 will be a M series Mac Pro, or when it will arrive.

There are too many unknown variables, and all of them are important factors in this situation.

More questions:

• Budget? Private/business, deductibles, ..? Or is money not an issue?
• Income depending on flawlessly working Mac Pro?
• Depending on Intel-/Windows-Software?
• OS? Mojave will probably get security updates until end of 2021. OK to patch at least for Catalina, or OK for usage without security updates, or neither? (This question is about how long you can wait.)

It should be possible to eke out some advice about waiting (for an unknown time & an unknown product) or buying what is offered now.

I would at least wait till the next 'M' release macs (presumably within 6 months), to see what improvements are made to the current spec, i.e. Cpu/Gpu cores and ram capacity.

I doubt.

The transition period is 2 year (officially announced).

Mac Pro series very likely is the last series to transit to ARM. I really doubt if we can see the M series Mac Pro within 6 months.

Without offerring any indication of your usage it’s impossible to answer your question.

Everything in the 7,1 is technically upgradable, and everything but the CPU is done exceptionally easily.

My Mac Pro has easily paid for itself in the six months I’ve owned it. Sometimes it hurts to think of the dollars that it cost me, but when I factor in the actual cost after tax deductions, and the amount of money it has helped me earn in the mean time, it was a worthwhile purchase. It replaced an i7-8700K-based Hackintosh that had worked mostly well for two years, but I was over having to deal with it’s foibles. Time is money.

I’m extremely excited about the new ARM Macs, and the second a 16-inch MBP with Apple Silicon is available I will have my order in. I’ll probably do the same with the ARM Mac Pro when it comes around.

But if you need a powerful Mac NOW that makes you money rather than simply costs you money, then a Mac Pro 7,1 is still a good machine.

I was referring to general M releases (not specifically macpro) just to see what increase in cores/ram comes next...
And whether Apple hit a roadblock with larger cores on an M chip.

Wait. 7, 1 is an overpriced dead end with mediocre performance.

Only if you compare it to flat out benchmark tests.

I havn't seen any 'stress tests' with an M1, say for rendering over 24 hours.
Or GPU usage, I have one app which works 100% with GPU only, which I doubt would work with M1.
