Keep My posts Secure?

Although no longer making money from my photography it struck me recently when visiting a neighbour that my annoyance at having my posted pictures printed and hung in a-anothers hall was rather irksome.

I know, it is a sort of complement but it still annoys; especially when commenting feels a little moaning and groaning and camudgenly. As if I am being unsociable or something.

So, given I post on various sites (for the fun of seeing them there) is there something I can do, without cost or ruining the image to prevent this embarrassing situation?

My old website had an invisible layer over each image so that screen grabs where blank, but obviously the young man who ran it for me could do that sort of thing with the sites back end.

So how do I secure my stuff (other than keep it in the understairs cupboard)??

Pirates will be pirates. There is no secure. However you can use the situation to your advantage instead of fight it and get creative in generating money even from the samples. Any image you put out there that isn't behind a pay wall you can watermark or put in a signature. Then if other people see it they can know where to go to get their own copy. If in the process of getting a copy of the art work maybe force them to watch a add or something before the image downloads.

Anyways these are just some thoughts. Hopefully I was of some help.

Post images with only enough resolution to look good in a screen, not in print. Most screen have not much more than 1,000 lines vertically. So keep the photos at about 1 mega pixel at best. Or maybe limit them to 800 x 1200 pixels. such a file is only about 100 DPI when printed 8x11. Also place text in every image (Full resolution quality prints available at...."

But really don't worry. I'd bet that not one of the shipped images represent a lost sale. None of those people were potential customers. Knowing this you can think of it as free marketing. Just make sure to take advantage of it by placing your name inside the image.

I suppose it is not the financial side I don't like. It is just the rudeness of it. The presumption that if they can see it they can take it. Bit like taking a bunch of daffs from someone's garden just because you can reach them.

Look on the bright side. They may be rude but they like your work enough to download a copy. Make the best and slap a signature on it and maybe someone will see it and want a higher quality copy for themselves and pay you for it.
