I recently bought an iPhone SE to replace a dead iPod. I don't intend to use it as a phone but it is a good backup.

With my old iPod whenever I had iTunes running the screen would stay on while playing. I think it was on iOS 9.3.3 or 9.5.5. But when I play iTunes on the iPhone, it shuts off after the screen lock time expires. I want to keep the lock active in case I lose it or something. I guess the only way to keep the screen on all the time is go in and disable the lock, use it and then go back in and put the lock back on after I am done?

I know iOS 12 doesn't allow apps to keep the screen on like Android does.

I did read a suggestion to turn Google Maps on and put it on turn by turn directions. Does that still work?

If you're using Google Maps it leaves the phone unlocked as well, which is no different that setting your lock time to "Never". Also using Maps consumes extra battery and is a lot of work.
I don't think Maps keeps the screen ON while locking the iPhone.

If I keep some radio stream active, this results in the screen staying awake.
E.g. you could start VLC with a network stream, that way the screen strays awake/unlocked. Sounds more like a bug of VLC though, but works for this purpose.
Unfortunately, if the stream is lost (b/c of buffering issues, ...) the screen will go to sleep (and quickly be locked if setup accordingly).

I routinely use this while charging, putting the screen on its brightest setting (and leaving low power mode) with the hope to stress the battery less.
