iPod Keep spare Classic or look at an alternatives?

So today I picked up a spare Classic just in case using some vouchers (my current 6g 160GB has potential HDD issues) but I'm wondering whether to keep it or return it (I have 20 days).

My Classic is insured against breaking but I'm concerned that they may only give me cash towards something as opposed to a replacement which obviously may not be possible in the future to replace myself.

Right now I'm wondering whether to:
1) Keep the spare Classic.
2) Get a 5/5.5G off ebay and replace the battery/HDD.
3) Something else, but I haven't found anything unless I've missed something.

I'm just wondering what opinions others may have.
 
Sony ZX1

Plays all the lossless files you want... I assume you use a Classic because you have lossless files right?

The ZX1 also has better audio quality and you can do a bit more on it if you're looking for something more than just a music player. It runs Android.
 
I'm not sure how tech savvy you are, but I have found that the classics are relatively easy to fix. Even if Apple officially stops repairing classics soon, you can always get parts from 3rd party manufacturers off of eBay. For that reason, keeping the new Classic as insurance may not be necessary. Also, I'm selling a 5th gen classic/iPod video on eBay right now that has a new battery and a transparent front. If you decide to buy a 5th or 5.5th gen other than mine and end up replacing the HDD, I highly recommend going to tarkan.info (not .com) and buying the iflash bundle. This will allow you to use a SD card as your memory instead of the stock HDD. I personally use a 5.5th gen with the iflash and a 64GB SD card and I can tell you from experience that not only do you get a lot more memory but everything loads faster. In addition, the fact that it is flash memory means that it will never break from a drop as the stock HDDs do. Also, just to prevent question, the iflash bundle thing functions exactly as the stock HDD does. You still sync with iTunes and everything. Nothing special has to be done when using the iflash bundle.

Sorry, forgot to mention it.

I mainly use my classic for MP3s (the earphones I use wouldn't give me much of a benefit), although I do have a FLAC collection in case I ever got something big enough storage wise (mainly use them on the desktop/stereo).

Looked up the ZX1 and unfortunately that's way out of my budget (IPC 160GB £179, ZX1 £513) as well as having less storage.

I had a bad experience once with an ipod touch so I'm a bit reluctant to repair it when my iPC is insured (otherwise I'd probably at least try).

That's why I was looking at the option 5/5.5G since they're cheap enough to buy as a gamble.
 
Keep the spare Classic. I'll be treating mine like spun glass now. If it breaks, I have no idea what I'll do. I don't think there is an alternative product out there.
 
I have 110 gigs of music so no idea what to do when my classic dies. I don't feel like having to pick and choose what I want to Cary with me on a far more expensive and inferior device like the iPod touch.

I agree with this advice. Keep the spare Classic. Although I don't suggest buying a Classic now as an "investment", even if you keep the spare and decide later on that you have "moved on" to something else, I have no doubt that you will be able to sell it for more than you bought it. (assuming keeping it factory sealed)

After the announcement of the aWatch, I saw prices for 6th gen iPod Nanos take a slight turn upward... new/sealed ones received a significant bump upwards.

Keep The Classic

After the Apple Event, I reviewed the entire Apple website and saw the iPod Classic was gone. I drove to 3 electronics stores and they were all out. After I went home, I keep thinking there had to be someplace that had them.

At 9pm I took a chance, went back out, and drove to one final store; and there it was; the last Classic in the cabinet. I immediatly purchased it.

I like MY music and carry it with me always; and the iPod Classic is my favorite way to listen to music. It will remain sealed for now.

I guess unless I see something else I'll just keep it for now.

Forgot about that, although the lack of a colour screen/native video capabilities does concern me (use my classic for the odd video when my phone isn't an option) and I don't think it costs much more for the 5g.

I plan to order a couple extra HD's and batteries for my wife and I 7th gen classics. I just put a new 160GB drive in mine a couple days ago actually. they are really easy to work on compared to the touch devices.
