iPad Keep videos playing in background?

Hey there

I love iPadOS and the near desktop multi-tasking experience on the iPad pro. However what annoys me is that videos stop playing when you switch windows or you start playing another video in another window.

I get it it‘s not a true desktop OS but still... is there a way to get videos to keep playing when either switching windows or starting other media?

For example YouTube videos will stop when you are on the active tab and switch the app or minimize the app. But when you open a new tab in Safari and then switch apps windows or minimize Safari the video keeps playing.

Either that is a (welcome) bug or makes no sense why they decided that it works that way?

Any ideas?

It’s a YouTube thing. iPadOS let’s you watch videos in a little window. But YouTube only lets you if you subscribe to YouTube premium.

Google /YouTube is just greedy and wants you to subscribe for basic functions. Such a ripoff.
In my opinion Apple should demand OS wide functions and if the apps do not provide that, remove them from the App Store. There are so many apps with video players which haven’t adopted PiP yet, it’s ridiculous.

I’m using the iPad Air 3 with iPadOS 13.1.3. Actually, you can do picture-in-picture in YouTube videos without having to pay anything. When you send a video to full screen, there are some icons in the top left corner. Among these icons is the picture-in-picture mode icon - see first screenshot:




After I tapped that icon, the video I was watching was sent to picture-in-picture mode and I was then able to change tabs in Safari, see second screenshot:




You can even tap the Home button on the iPad Air 3 and keep watching the video in picture-in-picture mode while switching apps.

I don’t understand why people think this isn’t possible in YouTube unless you pay a fee, I have never paid for anything in YouTube.

True if you watch YouTube from Safari, but not if you watch it from Googles own app. The Safari versions however has its own limitations such as not being able to move forward/backward in 10 sec steps (as far as I know).

I also have an other tip for you. I’ve you’re using YouTube via safari you can use the following link to force the video player to go fullscreen (default iOS player).

javascript:document.querySelector(%22video%22).webkitEnterFullScreen%20();

Just add this as a favorite bookmark and click on it while playing the video on YouTube. It also works on other websites which use proprietary video players.

If I listen the radio or music and just started a video in Safari or whatever, it doesn't mean I want my radio/music to stop. Just because of this, iOS are far from a true multi-tasking/productivity OS compared a real desktop OS.

This unfortunately was inherited from iOS in it‘s early years when battery life and cpu‘s were poorer. Now on the iPad Pro there‘s no more reason to do this. I wish Apple fixed it.
