iPod Keeping Songs off the iPod

I have a 8GB Touch that I'm running out of room with so I'm looking at songs that I'd like to keep on my iTunes library on my computer but not transferring them onto the iPod.

I know you can set it so only certain playlists will sync to it but I was my whole library except maybe 20+ songs.

When you plug in your iPod, select it under Devices, on the main iTunes window that shows your iPod settings there should be an option to Sync only checked items.
