Other Keeping Text Messages

Is there a way to restore text messages (the non-iMessage ones) without doing a complete backup and restore? Does Messages in iCloud backup non-iMessage messages?

I am getting my new iPhone XS Max today and I want to keep it as a fresh install without having to restore a full backup.

Yes messages in iCloud will save text messages. Just looked at mine and I have an old text message thread.
