Hello...
I have a Mac Pro 2x2.8 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon with 10 gigs of 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM. Dual monitors. I am currently running OS X 10.5.8 from an external USB drive.
This is because I *was* running 10.6.7 until a little while ago, when I ran Software Update to go to 10.6.8. The update required the usual restart, but now it will not get past the gray Apple screen. It hangs on this for a few seconds then I get lots of code in blocky black boxes running along the left edge of the screen. I have restarted a few times (hard reboot) with no luck.
So I booted off my backup startup drive, and ran Disk Utility. DU neither finds nor repairs any problems, and restarting after this still results in what I believe is a kernel panic (I am a designer, and about a 4 or 5 on the techno-knowledge ten scale).
So...what are my options for fixing this? I'm thinking the SW Update was possibly interrupted. I'd like to handle this myself if possible, because of course I'm working against a deadline right now. or I would be if I could get my mac back online. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Complicating factor: my superdrive is wonky and has been unable to open or close for months, so anything cd or dvd-based might not be an option, although I do have an old powerbook with a working drive I might be able to connect via FW or something if necessary.
