I've just had two kernal panics. The second time it was during start up. Now it won't start up at all. Gets to the White screen and tells me to restart. I bought this 8 months ago and have had nothing but trouble. Should I take it to apple and nicely tell them my iMac is f****d!!!

managed to start up at the 5th time of asking, heres some of the log anyone make anything of this??

This recently happened to me. While I was updating I lost power. Good thing it was on the first day of having the computer.

1. Reset the PRAM by powering off computer then pressing and holding Option-Command-R-P and then pressing the power button. One will hear the chimes and then the computer will shut down again after around 20 seconds (keep holding down all buttons). Upon SECOND chime release the keys and it should be reset. This did not work, however it was indeed after the second lid opening that it hung.

2. After resetting the PRAM didn't work for me, I reinstalled OS X using the disks.

I've been going through something similar. I am on my 2nd iMac now. First one died after four months of ownership and now the replacement has died 9 months later.

I'd call apple care. I know they are anti-refund as I've tried that route now that I've lost two iMacs, but they may give you a new one.

Are you getting the 2 nd iMac replaced ??
Mines is getting worse. Last night it took me 10 or 11 attempts to open iphoto.

Everything is up to date. Thing is this has been happening since I bought it. Last nite I tried to run the apple hardware test. The first test ran ok. Took around 3 minutes. Said everything was ok. Ran the longer test and after half an hour it stopped! Just froze. Had to power the mac off using the power button. Going to make an appointment today with apple. This ain't good enough.

did you recently update firmware?

Don't think I've downloaded any firmware lately and if I had only from software update. I do have snow leopard but this has been happening long before I got it.

Try disconnecting your iMac completely(includes ethernet and sound) then wait 10-20 seconds before plugging in the powercord and keyboard and mouse(leave external drives and sound, perhaps even ethernet, alone for the time being)- then power up the Mac.

I haven't had problem like yours but on other occasions when my Mac would take a while to boot or wouldn't sleep this has helped.

Edit. Should you experience that your fans are in high gear, then a restart when OS X has finished should eliminate this and go back down to their normal fan speeds. I have had it happen on one occasion with one of the white iMacs I had before this Alu iMac.

I've booked an appointment at the genius bar tomorrow. See what happens!

Finally took my iMac to apple last week. Just had a call to say it's fixed. Turned out it was the RAM that was causing all the problems. They have replaced my 4 g of RAM and said it's running perfect. I'll test it out tonight.
