I have a 2012 MacBook Pro which crashed recently on a Zoom call, after which it would not start up correctly (crash cycling after user login 3/4 through the progress bar). After trying most of the solutions offered on the web I managed to get it started in Safe Boot from where I was able to run some diagnostics. This is the only thing that has worked so far.

It seems that there are Kernel Panics on start up which are preventing it booting normally (see below):

2022-05-09 14:26:23 Kernel Panic (7 times)
Details:
panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff802a8dab9d): Kernel trap at 0xffffff802a8035ab, type 13=general protection, registers:

Does anyone here have any thoughts as to what is causing this and what might resolve it?

Thanks

If you have a clone, be it your clone or anyone else’s, try booting off it. If it boots fine, restore. My experience is if it’s not hardware, it’s seldom worth the time trying to chase down the issue.

I don't have a clone and the only way I managed to get to a safe boot was from an external USB boot and getting access to the HDD to use a Time Machine backup. However, this may also have had the problem, so probably not a reliable option to rule out software. I guess I could find a used HDD for sale loaded with an appropriate OS and try that?

I have the same machine and was having several issues with kernel panics. I tried everything I knew to resolve the issue to no avail. The only thing that worked for me was wiping the drive and installing a fresh copy of the OS. After that, all is working well again

If you have a TM backup, you have your data. Do you want anything else?
