Kernal panics preventing shut down after installing Mountain Lion

Hello, I hope someone can help with this. After upgrading my late-2009 Mac Mini to ML, it will not shut down from the Apple Menu. OS X closes as normal, but the machine does not power down. It restarts itself with the message "Your computer restarted because of a problem".

I have performed disk verfication, repaired permissions, reset VRAM and SMC. Booting from original hardware disc allows a normal shut down, so I suspect this is software related (probably Mountain Lion?). Booting from safe mode seems to work. Kernal panic report from Console is below.

Reading this http://discussions.apple.com/thread/4135480?start=30&tstart=0 suggests problems with nvidia cards and Mountain Lion. My Mac Mini has the original nvidia card it shipped with (9600M) and if I disconnect the display just before shut down it (usually) seems to shut down normally so might be display related?

Other than the problem with shutting down everything is working normally. First instance of this problem was immediately after installing Mountain Lion. I am currently considering a full-reinstall of Mountain Lion from the recovery partition and using Time Machine to retrieve my settings etc, although I am concerned this will not work if it is a genuine bug plus it's a pain.

Any assistance or solutions gratefully received!

I think it caused by the NVidia driver of ML is not properly work for Mac Mini 09, I have mac mini 2009 early and after installed ML, it crashes frequently.

I had to re-install Lion on it and now there is no problem at all. I tried to upgrade to ML and also did a fresh install of ML on it.

Thanks for the replies!! I think you're right, there might be a problem with ML, 2009 Mac Minis and nvidia. Reverting to Lion from Time Machine also fixed the problem for me.

My Mac Mini is plugged into a Samsung HDTV via DVI-HDMI adapter. When shutting down ML the TV briefly shows the message "Mode not supported" and the Mac then restarts (neither of which happen with Lion). I think ML is trying to get the TV to shut down as well or do something which the TV doesn't like. Hence the graphics kernal panics and forces a restart. When using safe mode in ML some graphics kernals are disabled and the problem does not occur.

Either way, some change that's been made between Lion and ML has caused an issue, which is a shame because in all other ways I thought ML was a definite improvement over Lion.

Same exact problem on my, yep, Late 2009 Mac Mini. Kind of annoying, but since it's the only problem I've got with it, I won't be reverting back to Lion.

OSX Mountain Lion Not Shutting Down Properly

I have this same problem on my Mac Pro version 3.1. If I choose "Shutdown" from the Apple menu it reboots instead and comes back up reporting a kernal panic. I saved the text but it's all Geek to me. I let it send the output to Apple.

I bet they are pedaling pretty fast at Cupertino right now!

I am regretting jumping to Mountain Lion so quickly

I have the same problem on Samsung. First I thought it was becouse samsung and apple is in a fight but i tried it also on my friends tv LG and got the same problem.

However this problem is low prioritized so far becouse only me and one more have reported the problem. So if you have the problem pls report it to apple support to make it more prioritized.

When i report it was only one person before me that had reported the problem.

Exact same problem on a Samsung TV. Used power button to shut down the Mini, took it over to my Sony in the bedroom (which has a busted screen, so not an option to leave it on there) and shutting down worked.

Seriously not impressed especially after having to wait for 10.8.2 for my MBA to (fortunately!) stop freezing. Lion was completely stable in comparison.

2012 Mac mini also having issues

I have a brand new Mac mini that is connected to a Samsung TV with hdmi, and I am also having this problem. Just to be clear, my options at the moment are to disconnect the hdmi when shutting down or use the power button?

Possibly a silly question, but is using the power button bad for the machine?

Bug report sent, thanks for the link. If this is happening with brand new Minis, hopefully Apple will receive enough complaints.

One thing I did note was that my Mini is hooked to the DVI/HDMI port, and I couldn't reproduce the error if I switched to a non DVI port. Unfortunately the picture quality/resolution is degraded when I do so, and I need DVI audio since I have an older 2009 Mini. I'm connected via mini-DVI adaptor fwiw.

My 2007 40" Samsung HDTV connected via HDMI on my mid 2011 base Mac-Mini was giving me a similar problem when rebooting. I'd get the "Your Computer Was Restarted Because Of A Problem" error message. I've since purchased a Thunderbolt to VGA cable from MonoPrice which eliminated my problem. Maybe there's an HDMI compatibility issue with Mountain Lion? or worse yet, an HDMI design flaw in our Mac's?

Hey guys,

I have the same exact issue on my Mac Mini (Mid 2011). It looks like the KP is something different each time...sometimes it's a USB kext, sometimes it's a SMB share, but it always always ALWAYS kernel panics if I try and shut down/restart after a significant amount of time.

I use my Mini as an HTPC, so it stays on most of the time and I rarely need to reboot it, but it is definitely annoying.

FWIW: I am connected through HDMI to an Insignia (rebadged Samsung) LCD @

1280 x 720p

Are we all using 720p TV's?

I had this exact issue with my 2010 Mac mini and my Samsung TV but just tried changing the res from "Best for display" (which I presume is 720p to 1600x900 and I can now shut down hassle free!!! Try changing the res guys!!

Thanks! Switching to "Scaled" before shutting down has worked a couple times for me. The only issue I had was that the settings reverted back to "Back..." upon boot.

This is still the best alternative I have seen to date.

My display has been on 1360x768 throughout (I never use 720p or 1080i, they look rubbish), so not sure this will work for everyone. I'm still certain it's a software problem, especially as it happens when upgrading to 10.7.5 as well as Mountain Lion. Apple has messed something up.
