2008 Mac Pro is spitting this up when I boot it..... Anyone come across this before?

Booted into safe mode, tried to run a verify and repair on all the disks. And it couldn't mount my external raid drive, unplugged and its booted normally.

Would external hard disk issue cause this? This will be the second set of disks in that raid drive if they're knackered :(

Yes, have seen similar before.

Just upgraded a 5,1 to El Capitan 10.11 and getting the kernel panic whenever a CalDigit USB 3.0 / eSATA PCIe card is inside the machine. Remove the card, the panics go away.

Try removing PCIe cards and USB devices to troubleshoot.

Hmmm.... its very annoying..... Im not sure whether to give up on the time machine raid drive I've got..... its the second set of disks its gone through.

I may have a look at a time machine NAS. Currently my documents are uploading to back blaze, but ideally Id like a time machine restore too.
