Kernel Panic on Wake...

About 7 times out of 10 when my macbook wakes up, I get a kernel panic. Sometimes it displays the "You need to power off" thing, but most of the time it just turns black and I have to force restart the machine. When I log back in, spotlight indexes my TM backup. I think it may be something with the TM drive... The TM drive is a 1TB Maxtor set up with a striped RAID system.

no-one can read kernel panic logs perfectly as theyre very technical. but by the looks of it theres lots of USB references down the bottom so maybe you have bad usb drivers or a bad USB IO module. id check with apple or try a reinstall. most of the time kernel panics have got to do with bad hardware.
 
I've had KPs on wake from the moment I installed Leopard. I believe it's a Spotlight issue with external drives: every time after restarting from a crash, as with guitarmaster18's problem, Spotlight would start reindexing the external drives. I've disabled Spotlight on both drives and so far it's not happened again.

Both my drives are Firewire but I have also had 2 KPs when connecting USB devices, once with a keydrive, the other with my iPod touch.

Perhaps Leopard's FW/USB I/O is a bit dodgy?
 
If you think it is spotlight...

Open spotlight preferences and drag the external drive to the privacy section.
 
I already had my drive in the privacy section, yet it still indexes. Maybe putting it in the private section does not stop it from indexing?

Edit: I fixed the problem! Something was wrong with the USB/FW hub in my ACD, probably some driver issue with leopard. Well, anyway, I plugged the drive directly into my macbook and no kernel panics so far.

Have you updated to 10.5.1 yet?
 
Well, I had another wake-up KP this morning so disabling Spotlight wasn't the answer. I'll have to start removing USB devices in a process of elimination.
 
You don't happen to have a Logitech mouse with the Logitech Control Center, do you? There's a problem with those that causes Macs to kernel panic upon wake fairly consistently. Don't hold your breath for a driver fix either, Logitech knows about the problem and it hasn't been fixed in the last few LCC updates.

Solutions:

Replace the mouse.

Pay more for another mouse control program. Assuming you want to use more than standard buttons. I've heard if you whine at Logitech enough they might pay for it. I've also forgotten the names of the programs; I simply returned my mouse.




Of course, if you don't have a Logitech mouse, this is all moot. This is just all I know of that fits the symptoms.

Edit: This existed in Tiger too, so it shouldn't have just started happening. Unless the mouse is new.
 
I'm using the 'soap-bar' mouse prior to the mighty mouse so technically I am using a Logitech. Never had any problems with wake freezes until I installed Leopard.
 
I have 2 MBP and 1 imac on 10.5.1 and a macbook on 10.4.10 all using the logitech trackball and logitech control center. I had an issue on one of the MBPs with wake when any type of mouse was plugged into the left usb port where the mouse would freeze if the computer was awakened by any other method than moving the mouse around. The right usb port did not display this problem. This was not a logitech problem since this problem was also duplicated on a clean install prior to the install of the logitech mouse and its control center. Through much digging and finally acknowledged by apple, the culprit is a software issue involving bluetooth. Upon disabling bluetooth the problem was resolved. Hopefully apple is working on a remedy. Other than that I have had no issues using the logitech mouse on any of my 4 macs.
 
I believe the problem lies with the LCC itself, and not the mice.

I'm not sure about the above poster's problems, but when using a USB Logitech mouse in conjunction with the LCC, there are problems that Logitech admits to being problems with their driver. That's all I know.
 
i'm not using a mouse or any usb devise in mine but i did turn off all the spotlight stuff and it seems to not do it any more.

Maybe there are multiple kernel panics out there.
 
Apparently Logitech has just released a new LCC version 2.40 on 11-20-07 that does away with APE since it is no longer needed and is supposed to be leopard compatible along with other bug fixes. The scroll is certainly smoother than before.
