Hey guys,

im experiencing problem for days now, in short i get occasional kernel panics whenever i turn on filevault 2 on 10.10. ever since i installed a new samsung evo 840 ssd to my macpro 5,1
sometimes over night and sometimes in the middle of work the mac crashes to black and shuts down

what was done so far:
reset smc, reset pram, various reinstallations, clean install on new ssd, hardwaretest (not showing any errors), removed all external hardware (firewire soundcard etc.) -

since i turnend off FV2 everything runs fine. so far so good, but that can't be the solution... maybe anyone has any ideas?

thanks very much.

That's odd, because your drive is working as it should.

Did you try a clean install and enable FV on the clean drive?

The code is machine check which is usually some kind of hardware problem. Either the CPU is going bad or maybe the RAM is having an issue.

However, that dump does show a couple non-Apple drivers.

Code:
com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.snowleopard	5.9.1
com.usboverdrive.driver.hid	3.0.2
com.motu.driver.FireWireAudio	1.6 50450

Might want to consider removing those drivers to find if those are causing the trouble. But more likely is some kind of flakey hardware.

It might be exhibited because change FV settings will exercise the system.

A kernel panic report that indicates hardware trap/fault handling

maflynn, thanks for your edition to the opening post. Pasting as code is useful :)

The code is machine check which is usually some kind of hardware problem. Either the CPU is going bad or maybe the RAM is having an issue.

However, that dump does show a couple non-Apple drivers. …

+1
to both of those observations and for what it's worth, my first guess (without looking at detail) was a hardware-related problem.

Back to the opening post, just one line from the panic report (and here, I intentionally refrain from formatting as code):

panic(cpu 5 caller 0xffffff8005c1f12a): "Machine Check at 0xffffff7f87a96242, registers:\n" "CR0: 0x000000008001003b, CR2: 0x000000010aa0d000, CR3: 0x00000000089a3000, CR4: 0x00000000000226e0\n" "RAX: 0x0000000000000001, RBX: 0xffffff803fada000, RCX: 0x0000000000000001, RDX: 0x0000000000000000\n" "RSP: 0xffffff83ac263d40, RBP: 0xffffff83ac263d70, RSI: 0x0000000000000006, RDI: 0xffffff803fadc800\n" "R8: 0x0000000000000000, R9: 0x000033ff000b720b, R10: 0x0000000000000000, R11: 0x00000000e0000000\n" "R12: 0x0000000000000001, R13: 0xffffff803f402bc0, R14: 0x0000000000000148, R15: 0xffffff7f87ab2e20\n" "RFL: 0x0000000000000046, RIP: 0xffffff7f87a96242, CS: 0x0000000000000008, SS: 0x0000000000000000\n" "Error code: 0x0000000000000000\n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-2782.1.97/osfmk/i386/trap_native.c:168

hey guys, thank you for your help!

finally i was able to run the hardware diagnostics
which gives me a hardware error

4SNS/1/C0000008:Te1S--124

which points to some temperature sensor in the pci express slot
probably the graphic card being too hot... but could this be the problem for a kernel panic and why isnt it panicing when filevault on the system partition is off?

TRIM enabled on the SSD?

Some of the TRIM enablers and patterns I've seen out there are WAY to generic for my comfort ("find 1-9 nil characters, then a pattern of 9 non-nil characters, then 20 non-nils, then a T" and erase). So, can see MAYBE something important getting wiped out in the driver. But I would expect the machine to not boot more so than flake out, but then again, could be just the right set of circumstances. Because...

As someone else said in the thread, some other "odd" extensions listed. If TRIM is enabled, and working OK, but the "odd" extensions have something odd going on, since the debug mode is turned on, the system is loading the "odd" extensions and those are giving issue.

If TRIM enabled, maybe disable that briefly and reenable FileVault to see if things are stabilized.

TRIM enabled on the SSD?

Some of the TRIM enablers and patterns I've seen out there are WAY to generic for my comfort ("find 1-9 nil characters, then a pattern of 9 non-nil characters, then 20 non-nils, then a T" and erase). i just checked, TRIM was never enabled on any of the SSD's
also i have removed all the odd extensions, but the problem persists
as soon as filevault is turned on on the system partition.
