I have a Lacie eSATA hub connected to the nMP. A G-tech 3TB drive is connected via eSATA to it. There is also a Lacie 2Big is connected to the eSATA hub via TB.

All of these devices are powered by a remote controlled power brick. In other words, I can switch them all on, or off, by pressing a button. The point is that I can have all of these neatly hidden away and switch them on, or off, whenever I need to from my desk. Obviously I always eject the drives first before powering them off. This set up has worked flawlessly since March 2014.

Recently whenever I power the devices off using the remote, the nMP has a kernel panic. I say recently because I am not quite sure when it started, but it's definitely within the last two months, or so. I suspect that it started when I upgraded to 10.10.2 from 10.10.1.

I have done some testing to try to isolate this problem to a particular device and have not been able to point the problem at either of the two Thunderbolt devices.

----

Disconnected means that the thunderbolt, or eSATA, cable is not plugged into the device

eSATA hub connected, G-drive disconnected, 2 big disconnected - no crash when power brick is switched off

eSATA hub connected, 2 big disconnected, G-drive connected - crash when power brick is switched off

eSATA hub connected, G-drive disconnected, 2 big connected - crash when power brick is switched off

eSATA hub connected, G-drive disconnected. 2 big powered off by big blue button - no crash when power brick is switched off

eSATA hub connected, 2 big disconnected, G-drive powered off by button at the rear - no crash when power brick is switched off

eSATA hub disconnected, G-drive disconnected, 2-big connected directly to mac pro - crash when power brick is turned off

eSATA hub disconnected, G-drive disconnected, 2-big connected directly to mac pro but switched off manually by the blue button after ejecting - no crash when power brick is turned off

---
In a nutshell, there are no crashes if I only have the eSATA hub connected. If I power off the drive manually, then there are no crashes. It only happens when I turn off the power brick with a drive still switched on (but ejected). The same thing happens when the 2Big is connected directly to the nMP.

The annoying thing that if I only have the Lacie 2Big connected and I pull out the power cord after ejecting the drive, then there is no kernel panic, which really leaves me confused. To add to my confusion, the kernel panic does not happen every time I turn off the power brick. It happens about 8 out of 10 times.

Has anybody else experienced similar issues?

Take a look at a thread on Apple
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6802084

Same tip: "eject the drive and then unplug the Thunderbolt connect and then power off the drive."

Go back to 10.10.1 - a good reason to always clone your system before apply any updates of any type. Some went back to Mavericks instead to wait out the Yosemite storms.

Thanks for the link. I did a quick search, but didn't see anything recent. At least I know that I am not the only one and I saw another thread on this forum today with the same issue.

The funny part is that since I did the testing above, which involved climbing into tight places, disconnecting things and reconnecting things, the kernel panics are gone when I power off the devices using the remote control, even though everything is connected exactly like it was before. I am not 100% sure that the kernel panics will not return, but so far, so good.

Very similar problem - Two Lacie d2 External Hard Drives connected via a Belkin Hub to my newish iMac running on Yosemite. When powering down the Lacies one of them always causes a Kernel Panic and kicks my iMac into Restart.

Have been running Mac Desktops for about eight years without a single Kernel incident. Bought the iMac about nine months ago and it worked well (on Maverick) with the Lacies or anything else connected to it. Then about five/six months ago I installed Yosemite, then the Belkin Hub, then Photoshop Elements. The odd-behaviour started with very minor irregularities in file handling that could easily have been my own fault but then one of the Lacie external drives started kicking my iMac into Restart after being ejected and powered down. The problem occurred irregularly at first but gradually became regular and accompanied by an Apple Problem Message and analysis window on each occasion. Have tried re-formatting the Lacie drive but no change. Am now considering erasing the computer hard drive and re-installing either Yosemite or Maverick. Any suggestions would be welcome.

For what it's worth, the shipping version of 10.10.3 seems to have at minimum improved, and possibly entirely fixed, this problem. I, at least, haven't had a kernel panic yet when disconnecting an OWC Thunderbay, although I haven't done it enough times to be fully confident yet.

The latest upgrade on Yosemite has entirely solved my problem. Powering-down my Lacie is now as smooth as it was previously - close the Lacie disk icon on my desktop, switch off the power button on the Lacie - very simple, very quick.
