I'm using a MBPr 2012 i7 15"

Last week I went to turn on my computer and it booted up normally, however, when it came time to log in it would show the loading bar and go about half way then my computer screen would go black. So I restarted my computer and wait it did the same thing. I completely reset my computer and waited 10 seconds then when I turned it on it booted normally. Then I got a report that looks like the one below. This has become an ongoing issue and I am starting to become concerned. I want to see if this is something I can fix on my own before making an appointment. Please help me as much as you can, thanks!

Yeah, your GPU is failing. Time to retire this puppy, I'm afraid as repair doesn't make much sense financially.

Yes, the graphics chipset is failing and that causes the kernel panic. If you can find someone who will do a reflow repair for you, you may be able to use the machine for another year or so. Otherwise you would need a new logic board. Another option is to turn off the nvidia chipset (which is failing) and only use the Intel HD graphics. You can try doing that with the free "gfxCardStatus" app.

Well shoot.... Alright, well if I was to look for a replacement what exactly do I want to search for?

There's a poster who had a similar kernel panic report just over a week ago.

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/black-screen-computer-still-running-gpu-panic.2103875

If you want a logic board replacement from a non-Apple authorized source (eBay, etc.), search for "logic board" with your computer model. You can use the year code, the model number or model ID. You can use everymac.com to find out what this is for your specific MBP.

So I thought I would update everyone on this topic. I had taken it in to a specialist and as you all suspected, the GPU was the issue here. Also though, the technician had pointed out that the CPU was on it's last leg and would be needing replacement soon as well. Personally, I remain a bit skeptical about the CPU. Nonetheless, I had the logic board replaced and I'm up and running like new. Thanks for the help everyone.

After I made my post (#5), there were a couple of other people who developed similar issues. I'm doing this off the top of my head, but I think two never came back after the initial exchange of posts.

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/worth-replacing-logic-board-2012-mp-15.2108531/#post-25867011

This is an interested thread. The last post from the OP was that the MBP was reverted back to Sierra and thus far (after about a week), there have been no further posts. Maybe no news is good news? We'll see. Notice that the OP in this thread was also told, by Apple, that a logic board replacement was needed.

In this thread, the last post (#11) is from rossman, who is able to find relatively minor fixes for what otherwise would require a logic board replacement.

Difficult to say if either of these fixes would have worked for you. You've done what you've done and it's best to just move forward from here. Thanks for the update.

Not the GPU! 650m never dies unless you've spent five years mining litecoin on it. It's the chip powering the GPU. If you were to solder multimeter wires to the board and graph it you would see drops to 0.3-0.6v of GPU vcore each time it crashes or blackscreens on you!
