Had a very stable system still on El Cap on my 5,1 Mac Pro 12 core 3.3ghz, Nvidia GTX 980 Ti GPU (6gb) with 32gb system RAM. It has a Samsung SSD 860 EVO 1TB installed a year ago running the system and apps and then a bunch of spinning drives for media, including 2 x 2gb HDD in Raid 0 for speed. The machine is used for video editing (HD/4K) as well as general admin (Office apps, Seamonkey browser/email, etc) and image editing apps like Serif Affinity and Photoshop CS5.5.

As of a week ago without any new app installations, the Kernel panics started. They happen about 3-5 times a day. I've been cleaning out the drives making sure there's plenty of space, removing old apps, and have just installed High Sierra.

Now I've checked the drives individually and Drive Genius 4 shows "Warning A possible hardware error was encountered while checking AppleAPFSMedia. (Failed to open the drive. (1)" This is the SSD system drive. Should I replace this straightaway or is there a more detailed check that can be done? With what tool (Drive Genius doesn't run on High Sierra)?

Here is most of the recent crash report:

This is the key info, your kernel panic is related to the nVidia card.

@tsialex I've installed and run Drivedx and drives seem all fine. Thanks. Would you recommend other apps to repair drives like Drive Genius claims it does?

@DearthnVader
Thanks for looking at report. I actually have another GPU I'm keen to install, Nvidia GTX 1080 8gb. So I'll do that straightaway and let you know what happens.

If you don't have bootable clones your macOS install, I've learned long ago that unless you have an app that it's license is tied to the macOS install, the best way is to backup your user files, nuke the disk and do a clean install - it's frequently faster to clean install than try to repair and manually find/replace the corrupt files.

Have upgraded from El Cap to High Sierra, installed Nvidia GTX 1080 8gb and all working fine and no Kernel panics in 8 days of operation.

I've installed new drives and tested old drives, all working fine. But, I still get 'critical warnings' from Drive Genius about the SSD System drive even though this is the new one (Samsung EVO 870 1TB) that's replaced the old drive (Samsung EVO 860 1TB).

Meanwhile, Drivedx says all drives both SSD and HDD are fine. So which diagnostic app to trust?
