So is anyone else seeing Kernel Panics with the public beta of Yosemite? I'll use it in the morning and head off to work letting the Mac lock the screen/sit idle. I'll come home and find that the iMac is completely shut off. Boot up and I'm greeted with the "your computer was shut off due to an error" message, and the log indicates a Kernel Panic.

Other major problems: general slowness; some days worse than others, for no apparent reason. Apps take forever to load. And in some boot cycles, Time Machine is slow as molasses to back things up, and constantly wants to back up 7+GB of new data every hour, even though I don't know where that much new info could've come from. None of this was an issue under Mavericks, nor were there any kernel panics before.

Yes I know; this is a beta, shouldn't be used for production, blah blah. I have two other Macs running Mavericks where all the serious business is done, and this one iMac I can test and if there's serious problems, it's not the end of the world. Still, a little concerning to see this going on.

Here's a dump of the KP report. I do find "com.apple.Dont_Steal_Mac_OS_X" amusing. This IS a legit beta copy from a redemption code, direct from the app store. When did Apple get so serious about tracking "theft" of a $0 OS?

Yes, I had to revert to Mavericks because I got panics every hour. Installing PB1 and updating to DP5 seems to be working for some people however

That's always been in OS X. In order for Apple to stay in business, they need you to buy their hardware, so that extension is what tries to prevent the Hackintosh.

Code:
loaded kexts:
org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxUSB	3.1.6
org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxDrv	3.1.6
These extensions are way out of date. If you're not using Virtualbox, you should uninstall those, if you are using it, update to current. There's no guarantee that's the source of your panic, but it's a good place to start.

Virtualbox was uninstalled long ago and doesn't exist on the hard drive, so I'm not sure where those are coming from.

I just did a clean install to see if that fixes anything. We will see.

I've two clean installs of DP5 on SSDs - one on my rMBP in a 200GB partition and one on a LaCie Rugged SSD 256GB in a 100GB partition. I had DP4 in both installs, but opted for a clean install and erased both partitions before installing DP5.

One admin and 2 standard user accounts in each install. I let Spotlight run for about an hour for each install. No KPs, no freezes. Minimal 3rd party SW, and only the Wacom tablet driver installed (which isn't functioning fully yet).

My 2010 MBP actually started doing this before I upgraded to Yosemite.

(Thinking about it it was doing it since roughly the middle of August).

Initially I thought it was Chrome, but then I left it started up with nothing running and it crashed/froze anyway. Curiously, the screen saver was running fine, but everything else froze. Normally it will just restart, at random, and boot to a gray screen. After a powering off/on I get that restart message you mentioned above, and the option to submit a report after I've logged in.

This MBP has worked flawlessly for years, would really love to fix this problem without having to reinstall the OS from scratch.

If you have VirtualBox installed, uninstall it. It seems oracle still hasn't fixed the kernel panic issues in Mavericks even with he latest version. Make sure you uninstall the kernel extensions as well, they are the ones that cause the panics.

If you have Virtualbox and are getting Kernel panics, it's ENTIRELY Virtualbox's fault. Uninstall it and the kernel extensions it installs, and the panic goes away. If you need it for work reasons, I would use a different VM app like VMWare.

This crash was apparently fixed in VirtualBox 4.3.10 r93012 but I and other people still got those panics. It's extremely annoying and Oracle takes way too damn long to update it at all. I'm much happier with VMWare. Pkus, you don't have to install kernel extensions.

Hopping onto this thread to report similar kernel panics on my Late-2010 MBA. I don't recall ever getting a kernel panic from Lion to Mavericks, but I kept getting them every hour or so after installing the first Yosemite beta. Since upgrading to the latest beta release, I've been getting kernel panics less frequently (about once or twice a day), but still much more than necessary.

My MBA usage is typical of a light user: numerous tabs open on Chrome, MS Office, iTunes, VLC. Chrome seems to trigger the kernel panics the most often (disabling extensions + Flash doesn't seem to help at all) but I haven't been able to pinpoint a certain source of the crashes yet.

I don't use VirtualBox or know what that is, so unfortunately uninstalling that doesn't appear to be a solution for me.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Kernel Panic Log files?

Hi all,

Perhaps a very noop question, sorry for that:eek:

I did a clean install of OSX Yosemite 10.10 and had one kernel panic since. Now I would like to try and debug this panic and see what went wrong.

Did a search on my MP with "show system files" but no luck. Searching the MR OSX 10.10 forum neither.

Where are those log files stored in OSX 10.10? Thanks in advance!

The KP log should be in this folder.

Code:
/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports

Thanks for your prompt reply! Unfortunately there are only x.diag and one x.crash files in that folder . Are KP logs stored during reboot after the grey screen?

I found these strings about the panic in file 2014.11.13.asl in folder

PnicDump%20ScreenCap%202014-11-14%20at%2017.17.45.jpg

Code:
Nov 13 12:36:24 MACPRO.local DumpPanic[34] <Notice>:
Nov 13 12:36:35 MACPRO.local ReportPanic[285] <Notice>:

Searching my mac for panic logs gave me no luck at all.

Are you sure you are not in the user ~/Library folder? You want to be in the main system /Library folder.

Just FYI - I had a crash yesterday, no logs. Very disconcerting.

This is odd. The crash logs are saved to PRAM then written to disk upon restart. I have seen them in that folder I mentioned over the years. I wonder if Yosemite changed the way this works somehow.

To be clear - no logs (about the crash) anywhere that I could find, and just as disconcerting, no signs of problems in console before it died. Just 'reboot' and that's it.

There are plenty of other logs around - just nothing for the event I had yesterday, so obviously no troubleshooting possible.

Same here! We need to investigate why Yosemite is not saving the panic log in /library/logs/x

Very strange indeed!

Hi folks,

I just had one a few minutes ago, I am new to Mac and nearly cried as I thought my MacBook Pro was dead.

I was watching a movie on VLC at the time.

Do have a reason to panic?

Thanks.

Can't you just boot in verbose mode (-v) boot flag and take a screenshot of the screen where loading halts then it's much easier to spot the problem and help you. There's no reason to panic, worse case scenario you do a complete reinstall and restore your data from TM backup.

Here's how to boot in verbose mode: http://support.apple.com/en-us/ht1492

Hello mate,

Thanks for the quick reply. I wa able to restart my mbp and google "kernel" and found out it might be software issue.

I have a screen shot of the kernel attack , again I do not know how t attach it to my post, please forgive my ignorace.

I checked for a update and found there was one Version 10.1.1, I installed it.

Would this help the kernel attacks?

Thank you Oxy.

Upload the picture to your Dropbox and post the link here.

Did you use any SSD trim kexts by any chance? Because 10.10.1 updates the storage drivers.
