Hey all,

I recently installed six new 16 GB modules and I seem to be getting some kernel panics (about 2-4 times a day). The 8 GB modules came with the Mac Pro. I bought the 16 GB modules (same speed as the 8 GB).

Is this the right config?

Slot 1 - 16 GB
Slot 2 - 16 GB
Slot 3 - 16 GB
Slot 4 - 16 GB
Slot 5 - 16 GB
Slot 6 - 16 GB
Slot 7 - 8 GB
Slot 8 - 8 GB
Slot 9 - 8 GB
Slot 10 - 8 GB
Slot 11 - 8 GB
Slot 12 - 8 GB

Crash log attached.

If I'm not mistaken, mixing different RAM capacities prevents you from achieving the best possible speeds. Maybe do some research and make sure this config will work for your needs. Also, it might be helpful to see if you still get panics with just the factory RAM. One of your aftermarket DIMMs might have an issue.

Make sure you are NOT mixing LRDIMMs with R-DIMMs.
Good info in Apple's support article.
My best suggestion would be to try the 16GB set, without any 8GB installed. That article explains which slots to use for only 6 sticks.
If that works, remove, then install the 8GB set, without any 16GB. Again, use correct slots for 6 sticks.
You would need to use each set alone for a few days to find out if the kernel panics return.

The RAM installed in Post One is very incorrect. Post Two is correct. See attached. If R and LR-DIMS are mixed, the Mac wont start. Using RAM of different capacity, installed correctly, is called Near Balanced and only causes a 3% performance hit, hardly noticeable.

So far one kernel panic today. Gonna take out the 16 GB RAM and see if it continues to happen.

If you have any updates, please post! I too am thinking of doing 6x8gb + 6x16gb, and would like to know if there's any speed penalty for mixing different sizes.

Thanks!
