I've had 4 kernel panics in 2 months. While not excessive, it's 4 more than I want, and it seems more frequent than I had with Intel.

Other threads on M1 kernel panics tend to associate them with something (eg, using external monitors; waking from sleep; ejecting something). But my cases have been rather mundane: nothing connected, nothing unusual going on (I'd be on a web browser or using email). TG Pro reported temps ~90-100°F before the reboot, which is what I get normally.

Are others getting unpredictable kernel panics on their M1 Macs? Mine is an Air.

Zero issues with my M1 Mini 16/1TB. I haven’t seen a Kernel Panic since the last time I used my mid 2011 iMac 27 every day and for music production.

Would you happen to have a log of that? Might be able to give a clue about the trigger of the KP

Yeah, Apple's kernel team needs to take a look at this. Like you also said yourself, nothing unusual seems to be loaded in the kernel, yet the stack guard was hit. According to this the panic was triggered by the window server, which is a rather huge component so it doesn't narrow it down much, but yeah - from what I can tell it just looks like a bug that they need to look at, though I can't extract from this if there's any reliable way to triggering the bug.

My new MacBook Air has about one kernel panic a week. Not really amused. I've made a Feedback report. Since none of my recent bug reports have had any result I won't hold my breath.

Apple seems a bit slow right now on fixing some pretty obvious and damaging bugs. Perhaps WWDC is taking too much precedence. They seem to be taking their time with 11.3 so maybe it will be big bug fix update.

I wouldn't be amused either. I've seen threads on other forums where people complain of it happening daily. But in the big picture, few of us seem to experience this, which makes me fear there was a bad batch of chips.

However, I haven't had a panic since upgrading to OS 11.2.3 (20D91) so hopefully it's been resolved (although as I only had a panic every few weeks, it's too soon to tell). beatrixwillius, do you know what version you were running when you last had a kernel panic?

I can tell you this, I have installed 15 Macs with M cpu and only 2 are having issues and we are in the process of sending them back and getting replacement because in the end I really thing it’s hardware related! It’s new tech and new tech is bound to have hardware issue when new .

if I had such issues I would demand a new apple computer under warranty

I'm also afraid that the problem is a hardware one. The Air is my reading and testing computer. I can't read on a phone or iPad so I really really need the Air.

I'll try the update to 11.2.3 first. If this doesn't fix the problem then I'll talk to Apple.

MBA M1 user here. I had daily random kernel panics for weeks until I removed Karabiner-Elements and I haven't had a 'random' one for the last week since removing it. I say random but more than often they were happening when I was connecting to my Thunderbolt dock.
But, I can re-produce one by playing a BDMV container on VLC or even mpv. I mux them using tsmuxer but the only player that will play a blu-ray folder without a kernel panic is Blu-ray Player Pro.

Thanks for sharing your experience. In my case, I have neither Karabiner-Elements nor mpv installed. I also wasn't playing media (though Netflix might have been open in a browser tab) nor did I have anything attached except for power.

Fortunately, I still haven't experienced a panic since starting this thread.

I get frequent kernel panics. Apps like "Google backup and sync" and the iOS Unifi app has caused it most recently. Also had one where I simply listed the drives using the diskutil CLI.

I'm worried the chip wasn't binned correctly.

Is it really kernel panics or "just" process crashes? I have LOTS of process crashes. Way to many and Apple sure has work to do. But I don't think I have had a kernel panic yet ??

I had several kernel panics under low load. Couldn't detect any pattern. Doesn't worry me too much. Hopefully Apple will fix in software.

If I knew Apple *can* fix it in software, I wouldn't be worried either, as I expect Apple would likely fix it soon. My concern is it's hardware-related, and cannot be fixed in software. Considering how most M1 people don't seem to experience this, but a few of us do, it seems quite reasonable that it could be due to a bad batch of chips.

It's reassuring when a particular 3rd-party application is responsible for a KP. It's disturbing when a KP happens when using an Apple app (and the few background 3rd-party applications have been up for days).

I had kernel panics every 2 days on 3 different MBAs. (Manufacture date mid November, mid December and mid February) One of them tried my friend with different use case and have no kernel panics. So I think it is sw related
