After I use my laptop for a few hours, I notice that the kernel takes up a ton of virtual RAM - like over a gig. Is that normal? I use iStat nano, and it shows that a lot of my 2 gigs is inactive (red) rather than free. I'm assuming that's the kernel.

Is there something wrong?

This is all normal.

BTW it is most likely that this inactive ram is programs that you have used and quit. OS X keeps these porgrams in ram incase you reopen them (it will be a lot quicker to reopen the apps) it another application neeeds the ram then the ram will become active again.
