Keyboard disconnection.

Hi,

I know this problem has been arround as somebody else has experienced this, I personally think it is something with regards to the apple keyboard drivers for the intel macs.

Now before i start i know for a FACT this problem is not with my machines, or keyboards. This problem occured on a Intel Mac Mini core solo and a iMac 20" I have 2 Apple keyboards with the USB 1.1 hub in the back of them, Tried both keyboards on both units and get same problem.

Mouse is plugged into the back of the keyboard in the hub.
Problem
You can be working away quite happily in windows then *Bing Bong* (Windows noise when something is disconnected) and the keyboard no longer works, nor does the Optical beam from the mouse. Give it 10 seconds, Optical lights back on mouse working fine but Caps lock light is stuck on untill the Keyboard is unplugged and plugged back in. Then everything is working happerly again, but it can just disconnect at anytime it likes, there is no warning!!!

As i have said, does it with 2 Keyboards, on 2 totally different intel Macs.

I have yet to try the new Bootcamp 1.0.2 drivers, but i shall do later but anybody else had this problem at all?

Had the same problem running XP on a 17" iMac.

I believe the problem lies in the power consumption of the keyboard. I believe it is consuming more power than other USB keyboards, and that the drivers written by Apple were not done correctly to accomodate this. Often times other devices that "suck" too much power will do the same, such as some optical mice.

One "fix" that has been suggested is to disable the disc-eject program that allows the apple keyboard to eject discs. What could be happening is that while the program is running, the constant exchange between the prog and keyboard are eating up too much power (ie: constantly updating the status of the key, whether depressed or not).

I've disabled the eject program, and now when the keyboard "cuts out" it immediately comes right back after about 1-2 seconds, whereas it was taking MUCH longer (if at all, sometimes I had to unplug and replug) before.

Do a search for how to uninstall that program. I think a reg edit might be needed, I don't remember.

EDIT: I should note that I was having problems with the keyboard not working in OS X (sucking up too much power and disconnecting was my belief), UNTIL I installed the keboard update 1.1 or something like that, and then I had no more problems in OS X.

I get the problem in windows all the time, the keyboard knocks off and comes back on but the caps lock is on and the keyboard is locked its not usable.

never had the problem with the mouse i use.
- so you think i should uninstalled the apple eject program and this will fix my problem? as it is really pissing me off now i am sick of it!

Happens all the time must do it about easily over 15 times in 1 hour.

Anybody else has this problem in windows?

Same problem; I just unplug the keyboard and plug it back in; there's nothing else that you can do..

I have had my iMac for 8 days and have had this problem 3 times. The keyboard cut out twice, but the mouse worked, then the mouse cut out, but the keyboard worked, spooky.

In OSX and in XP all on different days.

Only happens to me in XP keyboard is fine in osx, my mouse is now fine as i plugged it direct into usb and not in the hub on keyboard

Cripes people! READ!

I'm telling you, disable the ejectfix program (remove it from startup, do a google on how to do it).

It is DEFINATELY worth it not to have to unplug all the damn time.

exactly what did you search on google, i just went into registry and deleted its strings and now problem solved, it disconnects and then literally reconnects in seconds

Yeah I've removed the eject key program that runs in the background, but its really not great when I get an eject for a few seconds in the middle of a gaming session! I hope there's some kind of fix for this soon...

Ok I thought I'd update this. I've just updated to all the Boot Camp 1.1 Drivers, and was hopeful this problem would disappear, but I've just experienced it again a few times. Is anyone else still getting this?
