Keyboard gets really hot on my mbp?

Received my mbp 15" 2.2 on Monday, and I've been encoding some videos in handbrake. I have my system set up to an external screen. I've been keeping an eye on temp, which runs pretty hot- and i noticed that when its processing in handbrake, even the keyboard area gets hot. it also gets really hot where the screen meets the bottom part of the computer- in that hinge area. i know its normal for laptops to get hot underneath, but should it be getting so hot in the keyboard area too?

i've been leaving my screen folded open instead of closed even though the display is off because i don't want my screen damaged due to the heat.

The hinge area getting hot is actually normal. If you look carefully in that hinge area, you'll find that there's heat vents opposite where the display connects up to the MBP. This is where the fans direct the heat to, and the hot air escapes from these vents.

As for the keyboard getting warm, mine does it as well.

Wow, thats funny, I got my MBP on monday and I have an external screen hoked up to it, and I've been using handbrake for videos as well. What a coincidence. One time my computer got really, really hot (although the keyboard wasn't too hot). I decided to shut it down for a minute and then started it back up. I ran cool the rest of the night (although I was no longer using handbrake)

Moral of the story: Your MBP is gonna get hot while running handbrake and you kind of just have to deal with it

last i checked, it was the high 70s low 80s Celsius

when i get home from work, i'll report all my temps. i'm using one of those widgets that tells the temp, but it tells the temp for like 10 different components so i don't know which one to report or follow exactly

Report all of them. Or at the very least, the highest temps, which will likely be your CPU and GPU readings.

I'm guessing you're probably using iStat Pro, which is really good at getting into the details.

70-80 degrees C while using handbrake isn't unheard of. If I remember correctly, the max tolerance for the MBP's CPU is 100 degrees C. While I wouldn't recommend running it to the max all the time, short runs of 70-80, while quite hot and annoying, probably won't do any damage.

k here are my temperatures right now- i'm running handbrake and listening to music in itunes/chatting in ichat

CPU A - 83 Celsius
GPU Diode - 81 C
GPU Heatsink - 70 C
heatsink A - 68 C
Heatsink B - 63 C
Enclosure Bottom - 32 C
Memory Controller - 51 C
FUJITSU - 37 C

Those temperatures aren't terribly bad, I've had my MacBook Pro go up to that hot before and a little hotter.

Yeah, those temps aren't bad. If that was "normal" operation (without handbrake taking up the lion's share of CPU cycles) then I'd be worried. I take it without handbrake, your CPU temp is in the 50s?

some heat escapes from the keyboard, and we're talkign about a 1" enclosure around a powerful CPU. The HSFs are under the corners of the keyboard.

yeah, i guess i'm just a little on edge since its a new system and all.

is it bad if i run handbrake daily for a few hours? i'm trying to digitize my DVD library so i can have access to it on both my iphone and apple tv

Well it is a Pro laptop, so you should be able to use it for processor intensive tasks a few hours a day. It'll be fine.

yeah, my keyboard gets really hot too. It's totally ridiculous to feel uncomfortable while resting your hands on the keyboard. I think I'm going to go the replacing the thermal paste route. Hear that, apple? Totally ridiculous.
