Hey folks

i have 2016 late MBP with touch bar, recently started noticing keyboard issue.
some letters are typed twice when i hit the key or some keys i have to hit hard.

anyone faced the same issue, how did you solve this?

This was a common issue with all MacBook Pro laptops with the butterfly keyboard. There was a recall program but it’s only good for 4 years from the laptop purchase date. You might want to book an appointment with Apple and see if theyll make an exception for you. They’ve been known to do this for people if you ask nicely

The butterfly keyboard on your Mac is failing, unfortunately the only solution is a top case replacement.
Check the recall program linked by the poster above, if you are not covered it's going to be an expensive repair. Bear in mind also that the design is fundamentally flawed, therefore there is a chance the replacement might also develop the same issue at some point in the future.

What shape is your battery in? If it's ready for replacement (below 80% capacity), you can pay $199 for that, and it will also replace the keyboard (it replaces the whole top case).

I would push to see if they can make an exception for you under the keyboard recall, that way it’ll be free. The battery and top case are all one piece, so you might as well try to push for the free repair. At the end of the day it’ll depend on the Genius Bar tech you get and whether they’re nice. Some are very strict and go by the book, others will try to help you out even though you’re past the 4 year period

You can check your battery capacity under the Apple Symbol at the upper left of the screen > About This Mac > System Report > Power. But Apple will use their own tool to check the battery condition and may get a different result.

This is only if they won't do it for free, of course.

It is a known defect that Apple might or might not cover, just how "generous" they are.

how much would it cost to replace the keyboard?
or can i buy one from ebay and fix it myself?

The keyboard IS NOT "replaceable" (as a separate part).
The ENTIRE TOP CASE of the computer must be "replaced".
That's why these laptops are "time bombs".

You cannot repair this on your own, for cheap.
Further, the Apple extended warranty on the keyboard has run out on you (4 years from date of purchase).

Your options now are limited:
- Pay to have the repair done (which involves an entire new top case) -- figure $800-900.
- Rather than pay that, start looking for a replacement.

We don't know "where in the world" you are, but in the USA the 2021 MacBook Pro models can now be found "on sale" for up to $400 off list price.
I'd take the [projected] cost of repairs, add some more money, and just replace what you have now.

You might be able to sell the old one "for parts"...
