I am on macOS 12.2 on a M1 MacBook Air using the laptop's internal keyboard and trackpad. No peripherals are attached. In case it matters, there is a bluetooth keyboard and mouse on a separate floor in my home.

The problem I started having yesterday is of significant keyboard lag. I type a letter, and it does not register at all or is typed after the next letter I type. macOS is also showing the alternate character UI as I type, as if it thinks I am long-pressing keyboard keys.

For example, this is the result of me typing "mac" into the Safari address bar. I definitely typed M then A then C, but the result is the M being typed after the A and the alternate characters for C being shown.

Turning off bluetooth has no effect on this behavior.
The problem is fixed temporarily by a restart of macOS but eventually returns.

Anybody have an idea of what the hell the problem is? Or how to trouble shoot this?

Same delays or non-recognition of presses though I have the alternate characters turned off. I think I too once saw such popup when enabled.

Been thinking it may be related to accessibility. Though I have many such apps: Keyboard Maestro, Swish, Command Tab-Plus 2, possibly other. Also experience sometimes delays in trackpad scrolling. Not sure if related. Recently have tried not running some accessibility enabled apps and it seems better but need to test more to see if that’s it.
