Hi

I accidently deleted a system folder called KeyBoard Layouts that contains the file AppleKeyBoardLayouts.bundle. This is located at /System/Library/Keyboard Layouts/AppleKeyboardLayouts.bundle. After google searching my way through the web I tried several things. This is what i have done.

1. The folder KeyBoard Layouts is acctually inside my trash can but when I right click the folder to restore the contents it asks me for the password... and guess what?... I can't !@#$ write my password because my keyboard does not work.

2. I was able to located the file AppleKeyboardlayouts.bundle in the web and downloaded it but again when i try an copy it inside the system folders it asks me to authenticate with my password.

3. I tried reformatting the whole computer and installing a clean install but again it asks me for my password to proceed with the install.

4. I have a backup using Time Machine but when I try and copy the file or use Migration Assistance it asks me for the password and again i'm stuck.

Please help me with this.... I'm Going CRAZY!!:eek::eek::eek:
Any help will be greatly appreciated....

Can you temporarily change permissions on /System/Library so that you can restore the file without having to authenticate?

I am sorry, that is just unfortunate, and quite ironic. Check out this site, it should help linky. It's about how to get the onscreen keyboard.

Tks for the reply... I tried the keyboard viewer option but it did not work. I guess they share the same files?

I tried but it asked for the password to change the permissions... Tks

Try booting from the OS installation disk and restoring from time machine, provided that time machine hasn't backed it up without the file

How do i boot from cd without having keyboard funcionality? By os installation disk you mean Snow Leopard install disk or the original installation disk that came with the 24" intel imac

Of course it did. Sorry about that.

I wonder if you'd have a keyboard if you booted in Single User mode? If you did, and if the folder you need is still in your Trash, then the fix would be easy.

Sort it out with remote screen sharing from another Mac?

Maybe, but he'd need to enable screen sharing in Preferences --> Sharing. And if that preference pane is locked, he'd need to type ...

Worth a look/try.

I already tried remote screen sharing and was able to connect to the computer but the keyboard still does not work.

Yeah, I guess I expected that, since presumably the keypresses made remotely still have to be processed locally.

Have you tried booting in Single User mode to see if your keyboard works there?

Archive and Install from your OS X install discs.

Pop the DVD in the machine and reboot with the C key held down on the keyboard.
