Hello,

I was just given a 2013 MacBook Air by my mom. Before I reset it, it was running High Sierra, and was running fairly slowly. (i5, 4GB ram) When resetting, it was unable to reinstall High Sierra for various reasons, so it installed the original OS on the system: OSX Mavericks. This OS is so much quicker and I really like the UI.

The only issue is that after logging into iCloud, when I try to turn on keychain, after entering the password, it says:

“iCloud Keychain could not be turned on. Try setting up iCloud Keychain again.” (See photo)

After this message, I receive a code via text and a notification with a 6 digit code on my phone (as if something to type this in should be appearing on the Mac)

Is there any way around this? Or is it just because the OS is too old? I would really like to use this version if possible.

If it is not possible, please recommend the next best version of MacOS that I’m able to use that won’t slow the computer down.

Thank you for any help you can give!

Try login in again to iCloud Keychain on the mac. In the field for the password enter your password directly followed by the six-digit authentication code you recieved on your iphone, no space between: yourpassword123456

This used to work on older devices when Apple first introduced two-factor authentication but I have not tried it for many years.

If it doesn’t work with the first code you recieved on your iphone you can request a fresh code via Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security > Two Factor Authentication > Get Verification Code.

Thank you. I tried that and it worked, however, it said it sent a verification to "my devices" but the only apple device I currently use is my iPhone, and I haven't received anything. Any ideas?

I’m sorry, I don’t understand what worked and what didn’t. Are you referring to the bigger picture of login in to iCloud Keychain on OSX Mavericks or to getting a verification code on your iPhone?

To clearify, I would suppose the verification code you get sent to your iphone after you try to activate iCloud Keychain on OSX Mavericks is good. You just have to do the login twice on the mac; first time enter only your password. A verification code is sent to your iphone as you described in your first post. Then do a second activation-attempt on the mac with the password and six digit code in the password field as password123456.

Also, the above refers in general to 2FA-logins with your Apple ID on older devices. Specific to iCloud Keychain you might also be asked for the device password of one of your devices at one step of setup. That is usually not the same as your Apple ID password, instead the password or code you use when you log in to or restart the device.

after you got that message, did you receive any codes on your other devices? if so, try checking the box again and enter your password with the code at the end. then select request approval. your other devices will tell you your data is not syncing. just enter your password normally on your other devices and it will work.

also, i personally don't think its worth it, since it won't do anything after 2021 anyways. the apple servers have already stopped properly responding to os x mavericks requests and the only service(s) that actually works is probably contacts, find my mac (sound only), and maybe notes.

if you need help signing in to imessage (irrelevant, but useful), just request a code from sysprefs and enter your password followed by the code in messages. you need to wait 30 mins in between sign in attempts for imesage.

so el capitan was the first version to have a dedicated dialog box to enter the 2fa code. however, it is possible on mavericks. just enter your password with the code at the end! in the format: password69420123456 assuming your password is password69420 and your code is 123456
