I've just finished preparing a decent-sized presentation with Apple Keynote 1.1.1 on my 1GHz 12" PowerBook with 768MB RAM (my G5 is away getting its video card replaced to solve its 'Black Screen of Death' problem). I've got the PowerBook running in lid-closed mode, with an external 19" CRT hooked up running at 1600x1200 and USB keyboard and mouse. One thing I will say...Keynote DRAGS on this machine. Everything from adding text, resizing including graphics or even just resizing the main Keynote window itself feels like it's dragging the PowerBook down to a sub-100MHz speed.

I like Keynote...it's simple, and doesn't get in the way (plus the transition effects are cool). But its speed problems have put me off wanting to use it for anything serious again. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it the relative newness of the Keynote code, or is it just an yet another obvious sign that a 1GHz G4 really is on the trailing edge of CPU performance these days?

Any Keynote gurus out there want to comment?

I have noticed that keynote will begin dragging on my iBook 600 after I have been creating slides for awhile. I generally create a show with 30 slides, mostly text, a few pictures. If I reboot the machine, the speed will improve a bit.

During presentations, the transitions have always lagged for me. I just wrote it off to the system bus/MHz issue and have learned to live with it. Since I am long-winded and a master of BS, lag is not a problem during presentations.

With your system (1GHz 12" PowerBook with 768MB RAM) I would have expected it to be snappy. Since I am thinking about upgrading soon, I would also like to hear from other keynote users about performance issues.

The slowness of Keynote is KILLING ME. It is like three words behind me when I type. I wish there were a way to speed it up. I have a PowerBook G4 12" 867 mHz. Any thoughts, people?

Sorry to be off topic but you are the first person that I know that mentioned this problem. My G5 got the 'Black Screen of Death' too. If I turn off my G5 and let it cool down or let it sleep, 90% of the time it will not turn on the screen when it powers up. If I let it cook for a few minutes and use the keyboard to turn it off and unplug and plug it, it will work. I was planning on getting that new video card (that super nVidia card shown at the developer's conference).

Hopefully Keynote 2.0 will be out to address the speed issues. Powerpoint seems to be more speedier. Keynote has been a disappointment from Apple. It's might be from the same group that developed iPhoto 2.

I used Keynote (1.1.1) almost every week while at school and I haven't really noticed any lag. I've used it with a PowerBook G3 and my current PowerBook. Obviously, there was a performance boost by switching to my current computer, especially with graphics. My current PowerBook handles Keynote wonderfully. My presentations were basically 20-30 slides, transitions, graphics, charts and text.

Really? What about when you're setting up a slide and you're typing some text into a textbox? Does the appearance of the fonts on-screen lag 2 or 3 characters behind where you're typing? That was on my previous 1GHz 12" PowerBook (since upgraded to the 1.33GHz model). Maybe it has something to do with the particular style or graphics being used on the slide. Or maybe you weren't too fussed by the lag and didn't notice it.

Interesting that there can be such a polarised spectrum of performance experiences for Keynote...

well since it's summer, i haven't really used it in a while. i did use keynote very extensively while in school so, perhaps, you may be right. i may have just used it so much, that i may have ignored the "lag." i might fire up keynote, just to see how it performs.
