I went to run onyx today to look at some customizations, and it informed me that something was wrong with my hard disk. I then went to "verify disk" in disk utility and was told that that I needed to boot from the repair cd etc. because the keys are out of order. what does this even mean, as far as I can tell everything on my computer is working fine. My hard drive is an intel 320 ssd if that matters

You need to boot to another volume from the one you normally use. (You can't repair a disk while the system is running from it.)
The Recovery Partition is ideal. (Restart holding Command R)
Run Disk Utility from there, and you should be able to repair the drive.
Oh, and make sure you have a backup.

Sorry if I wasnt clear, I am not experiencing any problems with my computer, and would not have known about this error that disk utility presents had I not launched onyx... I was just wondering if anyone knew what the error meant since all of the results i found on google are related to non-working computers.
It means that your filesystem is corrupt and needs to be repaired. You're at risk of data loss. It's possible that Disk Utility won't be able to repair this and you may need something like Alsoft Diskwarrior or to reformat and reinstall.
On HFS and related file-systems, the entries in a directory are kept in sorted order. The "keys" referred to are the individual directory entries. Every file and folder has its own named entry.
Out-of-order keys might lead to problems in various ways: finding files, adding or removing items, copying items en masse, etc. Or maybe nothing bad every happens. Hard to say exactly what the problems might be, because out-of-order keys isn't easily achieved, so it isn't easy to test what happens.
I have no idea how the keys could have gotten out of order. It's definitely wrong, though, so you should correct it after making a safe backup of your data.

Welp that install hit the fan when I tried to repair from an external copy of disk utility... Reformatted and cloned the same data, and so far it looks like the issue was independent from the OS
