my wife let my nieces use her iPad over the long weekend. I don't know what they did but now the iPad is locked. It says to plug it into a computer to unlock it. I plug it into my computer and my computer tells me to confirm that I trust the iPad. I click trust and then it wants me to do the same on the iPad but the iPad screen stays the same. With the please plug into a computer error.

You won't be able to let the iPad trust your computer if you can't unlock it. You can try connecting it to a PC it has trusted before to see if it lets you backup your iPad without unlocking it.

Otherwise, you're pretty much stuck with restoring your iPad through DFU restore.

Next time your wife wants to loan out an iPad to the kids I would suggest that you do so in Guided Access mode. This is set up under Settings > General >Accessibility > Guided Access, and it locks the kids into a single app while they use the iPad, thus preventing them from doing mischief like changing/setting the lock code.
