Blame Microsoft/Hotmail, they don't support the open protocols (that gmail, yahoo et al all do) that OS X Mail needs instead it uses a proprietary protocol that has not been licensed to 3rd parties.

iOS does work becuase it uses Microsoft's Exchange Activesync protocol which has been licensed for mobile use by Apple and others inc google.

The best option is an app called Mbox mail by fluent factory. This allows full imap protocol access to OS X mail. It's not free though ($19 I think) and while anything better than nothing I do find it a little flaky.

Arguable but:

"ComScore’s latest numbers from May 2012 have Hotmail at No. 1 with 325 million unique visitors, Yahoo at No. 2 with 298 million users, and Gmail at No. 3 with 289 million users."

And 324 million of those people just use hotmail as that one-time account needed to sign up for crap on the web and a catchall for SPAM.

I haven't used mine since 1999.

I have MSN which should be the same thing (everything has been merged with Live), its not an option in the list but it still auto configures with just an email and password, so it is supported just like the others but without an icon

I was really disappointed there was no @AOL support.
C'mon buddy, get with the program, hotmail is the email you had when you were a kid, time to get gmail/@me.

I agree, but i also think that the high amount of hotmail users is because there are so many windows users, it's kind of like internet explorer.

When I ditch my pc and get my first macbook later this month, I also want to ditch my hotmail account that ive been using for the last 10 yrs.

What email options will I be presented with when using my mac? I cant use my internet providers email service (BT) as my wife already uses that. I want one that will work nicely with my mac.

email service fanboism, whatever next...

Why is it whenever someone exhibits a preference it's called "fanboyism"?

Some e-mail services suck and some dont. Gmail doesn't suck. Hotmail does, and I can't believe anyone is seriously using it.

Same as some computers suck and some don't. Apple computers don't suck, all but the very high end PC's do.

OMG I'm a fanboy

I still have a hotmail account. I use it whenever I sign up for stuff online... So then all the spam and junk mail gets sent there. Then I have a gmail account for friends and stuff that wont result in junk mail.

Seriously thought you were joking at first. If you'd got shares or some other shared interest in these companies I'd understand otherwise it's just sad.

It still works. Mail will automatically set up the servers and everything once you try to set up a new Mail account using a Hotmail address.

I don't understand what you mean by "not one of the mail options". Mail is like any other desktop email client. You can add any account that supports POP3 or IMAP. God forbid you have to manually look up the right server address because there's no "Hotmail" button during setup...(but like I said, Mail actually sets up the correct servers for Hotmail automatically).

I still have hotmail because I'm too lazy to switch I guess. I'm also afraid of missing email from some account or bill or whatever that has my hotmail address and I forget to switch my settings to the new email. But mail keeps disappearing from my iphone inbox after a few days. Does that ever happen with gmail and what else about gmail is so much better then hotmail?

on iOS devices, when since Hotmail is a distinct option, all my folders (including custom one) are displayed. on ML, since I have to use a generic mail acct for Hotmail, my custom folders don't show up.

and yes, I still use hotmail. I also have gmail which I got during the early beta phase (6-8 yrs ago?) but I stopped using it. just because you're using gmail doesn't make you cool. -shrugs-

Gmail's interface is more modern, adverts are less intrusive and integration with Android and iOS is better.

Lol. Maybe not, but using hotmail definitely doesn't make you cool, if you feel the need to use such terms.
