So I just received an email from Amazon saying I've been invited to try a Kindle or Kindle Fire FREE for 30 days. Pretty sweet deal IMO - they include pretty much all the models (maybe not all the options, I just chose the 16 GB wifi with special offers 7" HDX) and ship to you free. Also will pay the return shipping if I decide I don't like it.

Regardless of what this means for the Kindle (I would assume its either a clever pre-holiday marketing technique or they aren't selling well) I opted to try it out if only to have one for a month. They've always intrigued me and my brother-in-law seems to really enjoy his.

Just thought I'd share with you all! I plan to post what I think about it when I get it and I'd encourage anyone else who does this too to post.

Also if anyone has suggestions/ways I can hasten the learning curve (apps that are great, settings to set, ways to use) I'd appreciate them!

I did the same thing. Got the 16gb WiFi version, but got the 8.9" hdx. Likely won't keep it, but wanted to see the Fire OS and how good the tablet was in terms of performance.

A free 30 day trial! An offer I couldn't refuse.

Me too - really no intention of keeping it. I'm enamored with my rMini and my wife is content with her mini.

I will say though, I had considered the idea of purchasing an iPad Air AND and Fire 7 HDX.....

I am def buying an 8" tablet next year and as of now that means the Mini or the Kindle HDX. Nothing else on the market right now that is worthwhile IMO. Hoping this free trial warms me up to Amazon hardware and Fire OS. Also waiting to see if Google puts out a Nexus 8 (and hope to god LG or Motorola make it and not Asus!)

7" tablet is just to small for me and have become less and less a fan of the 16:9 ratio. The Mini is the perfect size and ratio for a small tablet. I hope Google copies that format.

One thing I like about the Fire is that you can setup usage limits for kids.
You turn it on before you give it to your kid to play with and they only have access to the apps you pre-set.
There's also a timer so they can't exceed the time limit you pre-set.
Wish the iPad would add something like that.

I assume I would really like that feature if I had kids ;)

Working on the wife, but she still wants to wait a little bit - we're only 24 after all.

The rMini is absolutely brilliant. I take it with me everywhere. Perfect size, weight, display space - fast and sharp.
