I have an iPad pro and am going back to school for a master's degree. I'm looking up the required textbooks in Amazon and there is a cheaper option for eTextbook versions. One of the formats that is support is "Kindle for iPad."

If I use my iPad Pro, is will I be able to make notations with Apple Pencil?

Thank you.

edit: I've seen tutorials of people scanning text books and loading it into Notability. Is this the only option for what I have in mind?

You can't take notes with the Pencil, but you can highlight text and enter notes with the keyboard. There is a way through the Kindle web site to export the highlights and notes, also.

I found this on the Apple user forums, which addresses your question (I was curious as to just what the capabilities were re textbooks and decided to find out!).

Short answer — YES. See below.

With iOS 11 you can highlight a word or passage in an ibook, epub book, and then add notes to it.

Using the pencil, tap and highlight the passage, then tap on it to bring up the options bar, and tap on the speech bubble, to bring up a note. You can use the keyboard to type a note. The note will be placed on the book margin, and you can tap the yellow box to open the note.

I use the Kindle App on my iPad. I'm assuming it functions the same as any Kindle App. You can download books from Amazon and borrow books from the library with several apps like Overdrive or whatever App your library is connected to. I haven't checked in awhile but I remember that college libraries are connected to the App too. You would just need a library card or college id.

You can export notes and highlights directly from the Kindle iOS app and send it to an email etc. That must be the simplest procedure.

A little off topic but may matter to the OP. If you plan to use an iPad and MacBook. The Kindle app for Mac has some limitations. If you create collections in the Kindle app they don't sync between devices. Well, I haven't been able to get mine to sync. After much googling, still no luck. I created collections to separate each of the courses with corresponding reference book that I teach. I haven't been able to sync those created collections between devices. Maybe someone on here can correct me if I'm wrong?

Update: I’ve decided to try out eBooks exclusively for the first time for classes. I’m just using the existing features in Kindle and it’s been great so far. Although, I still wish I had the ability to write in the margins with my Apple pencil on the pages. That’s the only feature I’m really wishing I had.

That’s good to know. But I haven’t come across this problem yet since I’m only syncing between my iPhone and iPad. (I’ve never felt the need to own a Macbook. I find iPads much more convenient and any features Macbooks have that iPads don’t can wait until I get home.)

Syncing between iPhone and iPad has been great for continuing my reading on BART.

Very happy with Kindle and eBooks for class so far.

If Apple added Pencil features to their version of Kindle, I would switch over immediately.
