I am contemplating on getting a Kindle Paperwhite for reading my ebooks, but the thing is that I'm not in the US and I don't have any books purchased under my Amazon account. I hear, though, that you can sideload your own ebooks (provided they're of certain formats). Would that make the Paperwhite worth it?

Are there times when it would be impractical to use your iPad or iPhone for reading?
I do have an Amazon account and have made many Kindle book purchases, but Ive never had any desire to own a Kindle reader.

You don't need an Amazon account to use the Paperwhite. Almost all of my books have been bought in other stores and sideloaded to the paperwhite or sent to the Kindle email address to download from there

Reading in the paperwhite is a lot pleasant than reading on the iPad or iPhone. Or any other smartphone/tablet
It is indeed possible. In fact, most, if currently not all, "books" are technical documentations I have downloaded from the vendor - VMware for example - they even provide ebook formats to download so you can move them along via USB or send to the Kindle mail address.
Especially outside and at night, there's no comparison to reading on a kindle paperwhite compared to either an iPad or a Note 8. At the end of the month (at least in the US), amazon is releasing an updated paperwhite. You might want to wait?
Those are a couple of the reasons I really enjoy my Kindle. In addition, it is much lighter than an iPad or other tablet and the battery lasts about 3 weeks.
I think it would be, I buy most of my books from other sources than Amazon but just side load them to my Kindle (as well as change their format if I have to) with an awesome program called Calibre.
I'd highly recommend the Paperwhite, I love mine - it's lighter than my phone, great battery life, easy to see outside and not blinding at night. I also find it easier to read on than other screens (serious reading of course, not skimming websites).

I have the lowest end current Kindle... I think they retail for $69.
One of the best purchases I have ever made. I use it every night before I go to sleep, legitimate battery life for weeks, great design, light... no strain on the eyes like an iPad's LCD would give me.

I don't understand why people would buy this over say an older Nexus 7?
heck the 2012 model goes for about $120 now for the 16gb, why not get that over this kindle. Best of both worlds and then some!

1. LCD Screens strain your eyes
2. Battery life - Literally don't have to worry about the battery. Ever with the kindle. I plug it in once every month it seems like for four hours and I'm good for another month.
3. It's lighter. You may say," Are you weak?" No. It's like comparing holding a big book to a small book in bed. Obviously one is more comfortable.
4. It's still cheaper.
As much as I like my Galaxy Note, Note 8, and iPad 2, reading on them is nowhere near as enjoyable as on my Kindle Paperwhite. For avid readers, eink is the way to go. Also, I have read a bit on an HTC One, so I know about higher rez devices. The reading experience is just not as good.
Yes, the Nexus 7 (2013) is a real nice tablet for many things. However, for long reading periods, it just isn't as good as eink devices, especially the Kindle.
One other thing not mentioned by others here, you can read it in the glaring sun and there is no glare on the screen. Most tablets have some sort of glare or issues in direct sunlight, and by direct sunlight, I mean with your back to the sun, holding up the reader with the sun shining directly on it. Even then I only need to have it at 30% brightness or so.
