I left my iPad on the floor next to the bed when my eyes got too tired to read. Unfortunately I then fell asleep on the edge of the mattress. Some time later I fell off the bed with a huge thud and woke up. It was as unusual sound, which came from my knee as it hit the unprotected iPad screen. In sleepy shock I got up to check the glass for damage, and to my amazement couldn't feel or see a single crack - except on my knee, which was now bleeding!

I had fallen on the glass at the edge of the iPad, which saved the screen yet cut my skin quite badly. I must be lucky, because knees heal and don't need to be sent away to Apple for repair. Tests showed all buttons to be working on the iPad, the speakers are fine, volume control and everything else works like before. Further tests showed my knee to hurt when I walk.

This anecdote was typed out on and sent from the iPad as part of a general test to make sure it works as well as it did yesterday. It's aimed partly in praise of the iPad's tough build, but also as a reminder to myself not to leave it on the fracking floor again at 3:00 AM.

No dents, no cracks. Three reddish leg hairs and a tiny scroll of skin sticking out of the rim where glass meets aluminum met knee, and a speck of blood. Nothing else to report, but I keep raising the iPad to natural light in case I spot some hardware damage. Someone in the sky wanted me to finish reading that book today, I guess.

Yes. The same person who allowed the tree branch to kill the mom and her 8 month old child at the zoo in NY last week. I guess your the lucky one.

If I weren't a hardened atheist I'd have taken my comment seriously, too!

At least you didn't wet it!

Although, I think I had somehow bent just around the dock connector, it made inserting the cable a bit difficult, but i managed to unbend it.

Need something a little stronger than Apple's case methinks...

That's a lot of blood 'n' guts, just for the sake of a book. What was it - "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee"?

Sorry, couldn't resist...

Ha, no in fact it was the new biography of Charles Fort, which I needed to finish by today.

Still hurts, dammit. A few inches further across and I'd be feeling very down now about having totally shattered the screen. Maybe a slightly odd dream is all it would have taken.

91 kilos versus our favorite apple delicacy. Double ouch.
