With some Apple products, e.g. MacBooks, an updated version comes out every so often and it's typically just a refresh -- a simple speed bump, for instance. Sometimes the update is significant as when the MacBook went to a unibody design. In any case, most people buy a Mac and keep for at least 3 years. But with the iPhone, every year brought significant change, 2G to 3G, . . . we know the story, and many users have upgraded with every new version, as I have. It worked out for me since I could sell the old version at a good price to offset the purchase price of the newer iPhone. It seems to me, just a gut feeling, that the iPad will be updated every year with significant changes like the iPhone.

If you agree with me, has that affected your buying decision, and in what way?

My current thinking goes like this: I only have a desktop, and was planning on getting the Air, so I have already set aside in mind about $1500. Out and about, I need to work on Keynote projects and Pages, which I can do on an iPad now. I don't plan on storing a big library of music on the iPad, and only plan on watching video and video podcasts, so I guess I don't need he 64GB version. Besides, I anticipate wanting next year's iPad with whatever new cool features, so I don't want to commit too much money this year.

Imho, get a 32GB Wi-Fi only iPad, then when the next one comes out and you think it warrants enough merits and features to buy it, you can use your left over money to get the meanest and best of that revision.

Personally, I want that iSight support.

What's your opinion of 3G? I am back and forth on that one. I worry about the safety of using free Wifi as compared to 3G, and have noticed it's a bit of a hassle to access free Wifi at bookstores. You have to go through a couple of sign-in pages, while with 3G you just surf. But 3G is kind of slow IMO, and 4G is here and will be up and running in a year or two. Also having Mifi card is intriguing although much more costly than the iPad's pre-paid 3G plan.

If you are always on the go, I would suggest it. Yes, I understand that free Wi-Fi frustration. Also, Mi-Fi card? Not worth it, $30 extra no... unless it's 4G, but still not enough to make me cough up an extra $30 yet (poor 4G coverage).

4G networks will have no effect because chips for these networks will be too power hungry at first. Also, Apple will not update immediately to 4G, they will most likely keep 3G for a while (say 2 years).

It has crossed my mind,as I would like a camera on the iPad, but as I've heard a few times, If you're going to wait for next best thing, you'll be waiting forever!!

Hmmm, I agree, Apple won't offer a 4G iPad for a while . . . what's your prediction on tethering with the iPhone that isn't JB. Do you think AT&T will offer that service for free?

Nope, I buy this stuff when I need it. If and when additional features are added that make the device more useful to me, I'll upgrade.

I plan to buy the iPad because it will be useful to me. If they come out with a version subsequently that makes it substantively more useful to me, then I'll buy that one too.
