Kodi can be installed onto the iPad without Jailbreaking

Yesterday I received a really interesting email stating that Kodi can now be installed onto the iPad & IPhone without the need of Jailbreaking your device. While Kodi itself isn’t available on the App Store, it can be installed via Tweakbox. I tried this last night and after following a series of instructions, I now have a fully working Kodi on my iPad Pro 2018.

I know that there is a lot of controversy with Kodi, but remember that it can be used for legal purposes as a Media Centre. In complete honesty, I have gotten so used to the Kodi interface for access to content on my Synology device, that I prefer using it over other apps like DS Video etc, as it’s way of categorising content is far superior to anything else available.

I cannot post links on here, due to the site having a page giving direct instructions on the illegal addon’s. I am quite simply giving the heads up to other lovers of Kodi that may want to use it on their iPad. I cannot confirm how well this works on the iPhone, as I don’t own one of those, I am only speaking from experience on using it on the iPad.

I hope that this information is useful for some people.

Kodi is a media centre which is based on the old XBMC system. While it’s primary use is for cataloguing your own content in a similar presentation of Plex, but can also playback any format without issues. In recent years, Kodi has been under fire for people making illegal addons which include streaming of subscription tv stations and films, live sports from around the world for free. But aside from this, it is the best media centre that I have ever used.

Must admit Thai I have never heard of that one before, I have always used Kodi due to it being free and open source.

I have Plex installed on my Synology server and it is a great app, however when using Plex on things like Firestick, PS4, etc for playback of content on my Synology, it says that the Synology isn’t powerful enough to transcode, or just wont playback certain codecs at all. Also using Plex remotely to access my Synology, will not playback anything at all.

However with Kodi, should I be at home connected to my Synology via home network, or using Kodi on the firestick ‘ other devices at my partners place a few miles away, I am able to playback any content on my Synology flawlessly. Also Kodi has viewing capabilities which include automatic conversion from 4:3 to 16:9 without any loss in quality.

So there is actually a fork of kodi on the AppStore which I’ve been using for years. It’s called MrMC:

Your kodi installed from tweakbox will likely stop working at some point because the certificates used by them are frequently revoked.

If you just want to play the occasional file, Documents by Readdle has a video player built in, and it's free.

It does not have all the features of a dedicated player like Infuse, and it is not a media library organizer like Kodi/Plex... but if you just want to grab a few files and watch 'em, it's great. It seems to understand the common formats.

@jermy4, Will MrMC let you attach SMB shares like Kodi does?

How did you install the app? I’ve downloaded it but I can’t get kodi to start, keeps saying the app distributor is not trusted?

Yep. There’s also a lite version that’s free but I don’t know what it’s missing from the full version.

However, if they end up forbidding Plex as well, I’ll switch to Android in a heartbeat. Weird install instructions and jailbreaking negates a whole lot of the point pf buying Apple in the first place for me. It’s supposed to be hassle free and ”just work”.

Tap Settings > General > Profiles or Profiles & Device Management. Under the "Enterprise App" heading, you'll see a profile for the developer. Tap the name of the developer profile under the Enterprise App heading to establish trust for the developer. Then you'll see a prompt to confirm your choice.

Can I get in trouble with my warranty if I do what you did?

The first day I had my 2018 IPP 12.9 I installed Kodi. Yeah, maybe the warranty is void - but it didn't break my iPad. Liked it so much that I also installed Kodi on a 2018 9.7 iPad. No damage there either.

It’s not that apple doesn’t allow it, just that kodi is open source and doesn’t want to pay for a developer account to publish kodi and I think there are some licensing issues as well.
