Lacie D2 Thunderbolt Panics

Copying data between two Lacie D2 Thunderbolt drives, one being a Thunderbolt 1 3TB, one being a Thunderbolt 2 6TB, causes El Capitan to black screen and restart, completely repeatedly. File transfers often report Error -36 (data could not be read/written). Also, the 6TB would not eject without forcing it or logging out.

I had never experienced these problems before updating to El Capitan. Curiously, the problems only seem to occur in one direction of copy, to the smaller HD.

At first I suspected a drive and/or data integrity.

Though, I found that using the USB 3 connections, rather than thunderbolt, fixes the issues. Including the black screens, the Error -36 reports, and the inability to eject the 6TB drive. This was a clean install of El Capitan which had the recent 10.11.1 update applied. Both drives have been formatted within El Capitan in the usual way.

Curiously, despite repeated black screens and restarts, I can’t find any log files to examine, other than application crashes, either in the console or the diagnosticreports folder.

I see some threads concerning similar panics with thunderbolt devices such as the Thunderbolt Ethernet adaptor and a few different drives when waking and sleeping.

Any advice appreciated. Could this be a thunderbolt cable or is it likely that OSX needs addressing. Has anyone else found this?

Lacie acknowledged that something was wrong but that no known problems of this type exist. Googling around, however, there really is a Thunderbolt issue with these drives and El Capitan.

Lacie would replace the drive with a refurbished one. Instead, I returned it to Amazon for a full refund.

I have a TB2 D2 with El Cap. I have not observed any problems so far.

Returning it makes more sense and I'm glad you were able to go that route.

I have the same problem, and Lacie is sending me an Advanced Replacement. I should have it in a couple days.
I hope this solves the problem. I also have a Western Digital MyBook Thunderbolt Duo 6tb, which works great with no issues.

I have received my new Advanced replacement and it is working good. Copied 3tb iTunes library to it without any issues. The Lacie D2 Thunderbolt 6tb drive replacement was successful.
