Did anyone else feel iPad OS 14 doesn't look like that exciting as iPad OS 13 looked like last year. For me the biggest improvement and addition of new feature is the Pencil and Handwriting to Text Feature.Rest all kind of looked and felt typical run of the mill. Nothing Ground Breaking IMHO.

Thoughts ?

This event is a joke. Apple did nothing for iPadOS except give it its own name. Same with iOS. See you guys in 5 years.

If anything, I’m left with the impression that Apple is fully committed to supporting multiple platforms moving forward but with a more unified architecture. It’s going to take time before we see more powerful features filtering down to the iPad line but I’m sure it will come.

Yeah the big let down is lack of external monitor support, but I guess Apple is waiting for app developers to create ARM version of macs apps and mac optimized versions of ipad apps. I guess IOS 15 will be the big year for ipad, with Final cut, Logic and more pro apps coming plus monitor support etc. And A14X ipad pros arriving, maybe with more RAM. The good thing is that all ipads are still supported in the meantime.... Sounds like the revolutionary changes only come in odd numbers (IOS 9, 11, 13 and now 15)

Last year was the big iPadOS year. This year it iOS's turn.

No great surprise for me.

Scribble should be nice and Widgets on Home Screen can be helpful too, for some. Those side-bars will be handy as well.

No New iPad in 2019 and 2020 = No New iPadOS Advancements Period lets be honest.

Scribble, and Handwritting to Text are both things that were possible before also.

(And the 2020 iPad Pro is just a minimal spec bump)

Lets be Honest the #1. BEST new iPad Pro feature Costs $320 after Taxes and thats the iPad Apple Magic Keyboard

I won’t be doing any scribbles anytime soon. Lol

I’m 100% sure it’s never been possible to use the pencil in any text field in lieu
of a keyboard on the iPad before. What are you talking about?

I want Apple to make iPadOS more stable and reliable first.

What kind of issues do you have? Mine has been pretty stable - I don't know that I really have any issues with it and 1-2 days a week I work only from my iPad Pro. I know everyone's experiences can be different - so just curious what kind of issues you're having.

Yeah - so many people expecting better monitor support in 14. Nope.

This was the only thing I was hopeful for really. Some of the GUI enhancements and other changes have been absolutely welcome - but I was really looking forward to better monitor support.

Until they announce proper external monitor support, anything else they announce for iPadOS or iPads in general doesn't really matter to me. They could have announced new iPad Pros with 2x performance increases, micro LED screens, and I still wouldn't have cared if I can't plug it into an external monitor and use it properly. Scribble, widgets, etc are just all fluff that won't make me more productive; being able to use an ultra-wide monitor most definitely would though.

I was happy with the keynote overall though. It's just the iPadOS portion that was a big let down for me.

Agreed, it takes a lot of patience with Apple. When I bought the first pro in 2015 I knew this would become a great device and could make use of its power and 4GB RAM. At that time it was mainly a document viewer for me... It took 4 years for that to happen... Now it will take at least one more year till that process is kind of complete... With a bonus maybe, pro apps coming from mac together with proper monitor support....

Yup. Again, Apple doesnt seem to care about families or monogamous relationships.

No multi-user support
No photo sharing improvements
No additional FaceID slots

Also, I have to say its pretty disappointing that they did so little for photos. Whats with adding a sidebar to Photos.app but still not supporting smart folders or improving editing features? The iPad is such a great hardware for photo editing but Apple could do so much better than this. Especially considering they already have all the tools from Aperture.

Anyway, I hate to say it but I think this is going to be yet another cycle where iPads not only are getting neglected on the overdue features and apps (Monitor Support, Final Cut, Aperture, Xcode) but theyre also getting passed up on the little things like a calculator.

This appears intentional. They can do it, but don't because it simplifies usage and because encourages people to buy their own iPads. We are a family of four, and we have 4 iPads, in part because there is no multi-user support.

This doesn't actually bother me though, since we prefer this arrangement. All I want personally is mature mouse and external storage support, and that has not happened yet in iPadOS 13. I'm hoping for those refinements in iPadOS 14, before the iPad Air 2 loses iPadOS support in iPadOS 15.

I used to feel that the intention was to get people to buy individual iPads. But at this point we have 5 iPads for 4 people because different sizes excel at different tasks. The Mini is perfect for the young ones but they need a keyboard and bigger screen for school work and I’m not going to give them access to my 12.9. So I had to get a used 9.7Pro with Smart Keyboard (my favorite iPad ever). But thats registered in their name so I cant even use it.

I know its not a problem that affects everyone but the more we rely on iPads to be our “computer” the more this lack of user switching will become a problem for families.

Expect the Mac transition is eating up a lot of development time, iPad got a lot of attention in 13 and it's later . releases, its a bit lighter this year as the attention is more on the Mac, next year might be another bumper iPad release.

A lot of the “no xyz” listed are a bit minor and perhaps not worthy to mention in a presentation. So maybe a few improvements that may be important to you weren’t highlighted are in?
Also a lot of folks on this thread saying it’s iOS turn this year”. Ok, but almost all iOS improvements are also in iPadOS.

Overall I welcome the improvements. Pencil scribble may have me re-examine my need for a pencil as I found it for my use cases extremely limited. Being able to actually manipulate documents with a pencil looks nice. Otherwise it was barely used before.

Honestly not sure what folks were expecting. I’ll reserve my judgment when I’m hands on.
