There's no much choice in phones ticking all the following boxes:

- LTE
- at least 1080p
- 4.7" - 5.0"
- 32GB
- 2 GiB RAM (maybe 3 for Android)
- at least quad core
- removable battery
- microSDXC slot
- not Windows

This is what I consider midrange now, too many weak, oversized, or crippled phones

I'm wondering what all of the people who like the 4" phones are going to do when they tire of their iPhone 5's. I wouldn't be surprised to see Samsung come out with a 4" Galaxy (I assume they don't currently make one). There's going to be a void there and they've shown they'll do anything they can do to stick it to Apple and steal a customer or two in the process.

That is pretty much exactly the specs of the Galaxy Alpha though, isn't it?

Samsung might snatch some of those customers with the Alpha. I mean, it has a 4.7" screen but the whole package is closer to the 5s than the iPhone 6 in size.

Over in the "Nexus 6 rumours" thread I was wet-dreaming a bit about the next Nexus coming in 4" and 6" screen sizes, but that will probably remain a fantasy. :p

The Alpha fails because it has no memory slot. It is also a downgrade because only 720p (I have "768p" at 4.2" now).

Maybe one of the new A series.

BlackBerry should not have a new full touch flagship until next year, and it seems there will be no new Jolla until then either. That's why I'm forced to look at Android.

It seems Samsung's Tizen is coming in November, but if it is only HTML5, I don't want it.

Ah you're right, sorry missed that about the resolution. And I thought the Alpha had SD card slot, was wrong there too.

Still think it might attract some iPhone users who find the 6 too big though, the resolution is only a tiny bit sharp than that of the 5s.

So...you had to put your last point in there because Windows Phone actually gets it and has all of those things? :p

No removeable battery on my Nokia 1520...but I think the rest is there (at least in Icon form depending on size desired).

Only said it was nice to look at, the specs are too low

I don't even look at Windows phones, I put it there just to make a point.

Sony Z3C is probably the best fit, but no removable battery.
Ah, 720p screen too, but IMO still best fit.

If I was buying a new phone this year, it'd be between z3c and iphone 6

I did not say there are none, there are very few and quite expensive.

I would expect to pay around $300 for it this year, what I payed for a 16GB dual core "768p" 4.2" with 2GiB of RAM from a major brand last year. That was at $200 a couple months ago.

I'm sure Apple will be watching sales carefully. Let's say that when they bring out a new model they usually see 25% of sales going to the previous model at the new reduced price. (Note: my number is imaginary, purely for discussion purposes).

If the iPhone 5s sells 35% (again, purely imaginary), they'll see that there's a substantial customer base for a smaller phone. Just like they introduced the iPad mini, nano and shuffle there's no reason they can't have an iPhone Nano if it fills a hole in their product line-up.

You can make a perfect sized 4.9" phone if the bezels are reasonable (I said reasonable, not extremely thin).

You are saying there is a lack of choice but you are also being very picky, there are some fantastic phones available at the moment.

I'm not being very picky. It's a combination of non-bleeding-edge modern features. I was already too lenient by not including waterproofing in the list.

Most vendors only focus on flagship and me-too devices.
