I noticed that devices without Home Buttons require a swipe from the right or bottom edges. This is fine for most apps but it may interfere with games that involve in a lot of swiping since it may accidentally activate the Home screen.

Is this a point of concern?

The question that comes to my mind is - how many gestures are there that aren't already enabled in iOS 12 on the current iPad Pros ?

Hmm ain't too sure about that though, maybe if there are more leaks from the code but I doubt it

Not worried. I have been using FaceID for over a year and it is becoming "inconvenient" having to use TouchID on my iPad. I have caught myself "swiping up" on my iPad multiple times!

Bring it on Apple! Daddy wants a new 11" iPad Pro LTE!

Sorry, I am unsure what you mean. My issue is not with FaceID, my issue was potential accidental swipe ups that interrupt the app and brings you the Home screen when you have to swipe up in an app

Considering it’s possible to use existing iPads (mostly) without the home button makes me not worry about it at all.

All navigation (swiping for dock, to go home, multitasking, etc) is all how it would function on an iPad without a home button.

I’m not worried. I hate the home button. I have had 4 iPads since the very first iPad, and the home button has failed on every one of them. So no, I won’t miss it at all. Good riddance. Buh-bye.

Same here, that's what I was trying to infer in my reply #2.

I don't own an iPhone X so I have no idea what we're missing so I can't say for sure but as it stands now I use my home button only for TouchID.

On the iPhone it feels even more natural, likely because of the addition of Face ID and quick gestures when holding it with one hand.

Though I’m looking forward to an iPad with Face ID and tap to wake (I wonder if it’ll get raise to wake like iPhones have?)

Yeah I get that we can adapt to the lack of Home button in terms of the functions replaced (e.g. getting to the Home screen, FaceID instead of TouchID) but just am unsure about the swipes that I need to do.

Let me try a different approach: If you are already using a device without Home button, when using an app like games, have you gotten back to the Home screen accidentally due to such swipes?

I can't answer your question sorry. It'll be interesting to see how iPad game developers adapt, but you'd think they'd be all over this, especially since the IOS gestures have been around for more than a year.

I haven't noticed complaints from gamers using the iPhone X re: Home swipe gesture interference. Perhaps you have?

I haven't asked around yet as this possibility did not occur to me until when I was using the demo units of iPhone Xs at the Apple Store yesterday.

Since no one has mentioned this before I guess perhaps this is a case of "no news is good news"?

By the way, are these swipe gestures effective only on the very edge of the device?

I think the swiping from left/right edges are closer to the very edge, whereas swiping up from the bottom can be done from slightly further in.

To answer the OP....it depends on the game. I know of two games where you have to swipe up from the bottom twice to go to the home screen. Candy Crush and Clash of Clans. The first swipe up doesn’t do anything other than move the board and the second swipe up (within a second or two) will return you to the home screen. These are just the two games I have experience with, but I’m sure there’s a lot more out there with the same behavior.

Having used an iPhone X for the past 11 months - I have to say I have not once accidentally gone back to the home screen.

11" ?? Are there plans for a .5" increase? I got the 12.9" 2nd gen and it's great with the keyboard and Apple pencil. But I still find I use my iPhone and iMac much more. This coming year may be the first in several that I don't upgrade my iPad. I still find the touchID faster than faceID (iPhone XS Max)

The only frustration I have with the iPhone X and XS Max is flicking up to get to the home screen. Some times it takes a number of times to get it right and not enter into the app switcher. grrr.

I tried the 12.9 but more size than I wanted to put up with. Yes, 11" instead of 10.5.

Like it or not Touch-ID is dead on the new iPad Pro units. FaceID worked very well for me this last year, no problems at all.

Yeah, I figured TouchID's days were over. I'm fine with FaceID but I look forward to future generations of it, especially since I've grown a huge beard. I'm not sure if it interferes with it or not, but at some point during the day a number of FaceID attempts fail. But I'm not losing the beard, it's taken me almost a year to grow this thing

I can just frown and face ID does not work but 99% of the time it works for me. I forget what it is doing sometimes.

I prefer the button, no question, but with my iPhone X, I've largely gotten used to swiping instead of the button. I suspect, I or others will have little trouble acclimating themselves to a button-less iPad.

Thanks, this assures me since most of the play area of the games I play are not around there

“Possible accidental swipe ups”.

Really?

Frankly, I am unsure; I just saw the possibility and thus made this thread to confirm/disprove it

Ah nice, thanks! Now I know what to ask for

Thanks! This is quite reassuring to hear too!
[doublepost=1539360223][/doublepost]And as for FaceID vs TouchID: I just see FaceID as one less mechanical part needed to be accounted for in repairs.

I didn't really think it would be an issue, but I have been playing Kingdom Hearts Union χ and I keep bringing myself into the app switcher when trying to navigate in the game which is FRUSTRATING.

The array of sensors needed for Face ID are also parts that could fail and need to be replaced. I get what you're saying in that it's not a moving part the user physically interacts with, but then neither was it on the iPhone 7 or 8.
