and there was also another guy injured by one as well, like Steve Irwin, he spent a month or so in hospital but eventually recovered.

Dangerous things these.

Very tragic. You just never know when something will happen out of the blue (no pun intended) and then all of a sudden, everything you take for granted is out the window. How quickly things can happen and change. It's for reasons like this that I consciously give thanks every single day for being alive and having such a great life.

I keep seeing that link, and I think, "I can live without that story in my head"

Just read about a 6 year old and a pool accident - very weird story, and I wish I hadn't read it!

Edit: Link removed
jeeze!!!!
and whats this toilet story i hear of???/

riscy's link shoots through the roof on cringe factor. That's not something to think about too much. I never want to see pictures.

I apologise, but that is just one story I wish I hadn't read - poor kid.

Sorry for sharing it, but I did give a sort of warning.

Edit: I have removed the link in the previous post, I just thought it was too nasty.

A story like this just makes me want to become an existentialist even more.

Edit: Damn you riscy! Thanks for sharing that story.. NOT

<pedantry>

1. Spotted Eagle Ray, not stingray.
2. Not technically killed by the ray, but by the fall.

</pedantry>

Still, maybe someone should put an entry for "getting Irwined" at urbandictionary.com. :)

Poor woman, feel bad for her. Those rays are giant, if anyone looks up pictures of them you will see what I mean. 10 foot wingspan in the larger specimens.

Also somewhat disturbed at the lack of respect for Steve Irwin, considering he was a man filled with positive energy and joy and dedicated his life to making the world a better place, who died in a tragic accident.

He was also a bit of an idiot, mind you. He breached Environmental Protection laws agreed to internationally (with regards to Antarctica only) because he simply believed the rules didn't apply to him. Sliding down the ice in Antarctica with penguins in tow isn't exactly with the "no touching" rules down there.

I liked him, but oh well, if he can take things like that so lightly, then I can take his freak death lightly.

That's the way to be for sure! :)

Make the most of every day!

Sad accident.

Actually, she was killed by the ray hitting her head and causing, "multiple skull fractures and direct brain injury resulting in sudden death."

From this article.

That's life. <snip> Anyone can get Irwin'ed at any time.
So true!

That's life. It's a freak accident, but people die from those too. It doesn't all have to be natural, or accidental, or really morbid. Anyone can get Irwin'ed at any time.

You know, that's one of my biggest fears in life. You are right though--it is life. Say, outta curiosity, does anyone have any, uhm, stats of how many freak accidents there are daily?

very tragic about that little girl. I don't know if your link was a recent one, but she just died this past week :( She had spent most of the time since that accident in the hospital and had an intestine or related area transplant and it rejected.

Before we had kids, I'd hear of a kid dying and would be sad, but it's nothing like the overwhelming sadness and fear I realize now that I have 2 boys.

And one of them is 6 so I know, in a sense, of what that little girl was like ie. fav tv shows, grade 1 work, bday parties.

so sad....

From this article.

Actually… read the link again. First paragraph…
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A boater who was killed when a ray jumped out of the water in the Florida Keys and hit her face died of skull fractures and brain injuries, not from the animal's poisonous barb, a medical examiner said Friday.

Actually… read the link again. First paragraph
The first paragraph is just stating that she was not killed by the barb.

You might want to actually read the whole article. Down a few paragraphs in the same article:

Article said:
Monroe County's medical examiner, Dr. Michael Hunter, determined that the cause of death was "blunt force" head injury and that the collision with the ray killed her off Marathon, about 50 miles northeast of Key West.

Hunter's report noted she suffered "multiple skull fractures and direct brain injury resulting in sudden death," said Jorge Pino, spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Another article.

There are many other articles that state pretty much the same thing. When you consider the boat was going 25mph, and the ray had some speed as well, the impact was strong and it killed both of them.
