Okay, so before we get started, I need to explain what I mean. Let me start off by saying that I have an iPhone 7 Plus and ever since iOS 10.2 was released, certain wallpapers actually make my iPhone drop frames when opening and closing SOME apps (Safari and Mail in 10.2.x and now even Messages in iOS 10.3).

I think this bug ONLY affects the iPhone 7 PLUS models and not other iOS devices. So if you don't have an iPhone 7 Plus to test these with, then please do not contribute to the thread.

I'm posting here today to offer up iPhone 7 Plus wallpapers that DO NOT make Mail, Safari and Messages stutter when opening and closing them. These wallpapers will help to make your iPhone 7 Plus smoother. If you're using a "good" wallpaper now, then you probably won't notice a difference, but if you're using a "bad" one, some of these could be really great for you.

I'm not trying to start an argument and I already know some of you are going to be like "Dude, your iPhone is messed up, mine is perfect, there's no lag ever... yours is defective and you need to return it." my response to that is: This is my second iPhone 7 Plus and it does the same thing as my first. It only started with iOS 10.2. Yes I've restored. It only happens with most wallpapers, but others are perfectly fine. I know what I see with my eyes, so I know when I'm using a wallpaper that "works" and when I'm using one that doesn't work.

These wallpapers could also help eliminate stuttering when opening folders as well. I think it has something to do with the iPhone 7 Plus resolution downsampling. Certain wallpapers might put too much strain on the downsampling process (or the blurring effect).

The attached files are examples of wallpapers that make my iPhone stutter-free. If anyone has any they'd like to contribute, go ahead. I can test them for you.

Just got a 7 Plus and can confirm that some wallpapers make messages, phone app stutter when opening just a bit.
Its such a weird bug thats still present in ios 10.3

Thank you. I'm surprised more people aren't aware of this bug. It was fine up until 10.2.

Well if people are just using their phone they may simply not notice it. it took me a little bit to actually see it but once you do its more noticeable.

These are all working for me in 10.3.1

Funny though, the green rain one and the colored paint one used to make my phone stutter. No idea why those are working now, but there are still some that definitely do make my iPhone 7 Plus stutter.

The mountain image used to stutter, but it's good now. I'm on 10.3.1.

Thanks bud. I love that mountain one for my lock screen. Quick question. Were you experiencing the wallpaper-specific lag with lock screen wallpapers or just home screen?

I'm not entirely sure. I use the same wallpaper for both screens as I dislike the fade effect when you use 2 different ones.

Interestingly if I download one of the stock wallpapers from the web it does not stutter. For example the wallpaper with the blue or red blob.

Nice find man. I can't say I noticed the stutter but it definitely works faster with a plain black background.

And I'm assuming the version pre-loaded on your phone does stutter?

This wallpaper makes my phone stutter although I'm finding that some of the stutter wallpapers that used to give me problems no longer do, but the issue is still there for some images (like the one I'm posting right now)

Isn't it ridiculous that the newest iPhone model, 7-8 months after launch still has such weird stutter and at the same time older models do not have it?
Has anyone reported this to Apple?

Could you provide me with a "bad" wallpaper so I can try and reproduce it? How bad is the frame drop? I am pretty sensitive to frame drops and was totally raising hell when iOS 9-9.2 were the newest releases. They were so choppy. Yet everyone denied it.

I *think* I know what you are talking about, I have noticed little micro stutters when opening and closing apps, but I especially notice it with wallpapers. It hasn't been enough to really bother me and make me complain about it, but I did notice. I just want to know if some wallpapers trigger it and make it particularly bad, which would mean you are seeing something worse than what I've been seeing.

Have you been able to tie this to anything rock solid? Like resolution of the image set as the wallpaper? Or does it seem more or less random?

[Edit] Sorry, I should've gone through the thread more thoroughly. I saw you already put examples of "bad" wallpapers. I will try them now.

[Edit 2] Just tried it and wow... You weren't kidding. I always thought folders were kind of stuttery but now I know why... I'm glad I can have super smooth folders now though.

[Edit 3] I am noticing some small frame drops still with the "smooth" wallpapers, I feel like I should add. Just not nearly as bad as with some other wallpapers. I mostly see it when when closing folders. And the phone dialer seems to be the worst offender as far as opening and closing actual apps.

Thanks for the info! I don't use folders, so that could be why I haven't noticed that yet. I don't open the phone app a lot so I didn't notice the dialer either. For the record, 10.1 and below didn't have this problem, but I'd happily take this problem over the mess that was 10.0-10.2 with the opening and closing animations... at least this one is fixable!
