Hello,

I’m just wondering if anyone can help me. I’m having a problem where notes lags... notes. I can understand a complex app lagging, but notes? When typing it can take twenty seconds for the text to appear.

Funnily enough, most of the time notes is absolutely fine, but I recently started a course and created a folder in notes for that. It is only that folder which has this lag.

What iPad model are you using? What iOS version?
Is it the Apple Notes app or something similar from the App Store?

What troubleshooting have you tried so far?

Are you using the software keyboard?

I’m using an iPad mini 4, iPad OS and it’s the standard apple notes app. I’ve used both the defaukt software keyboard and bluetooth keyboard, it has the same lag on both.

I’ve done the usual restart, closing the app. One post suggested closing all bg apps would help and it did offer a very, very slight improvement.

Its probably due to the age of your device. The iPad mini 4 is more than five years old now, so its beginning to slow down.

I find that a little hard to believe. Yes it’s an older device but it’s still running video, safari, pages, spreadsheets. Sure it would probably struggle to handle the latest games and processor intense apps. But notes?

Also remember, the lag is only happening on one particular folder in notes, not any of the others. That seems more like a software bug rather than hardware.

Have you hard booted your iPad? (Holding down power + home till it reboots?)

How many notes do you have?

I've found Notes to get laggy if I have way too much content in a single note - I tried using one specific note for a math class and after 12? pages or so - it got so laggy I couldn't use that specific note anymore.

I moved to Notability for my college classes and that handles 20-40 pages with no problem.

I’ve shut it down (slide to power off) but not a hard reboot. I’ll try that now.

I think you may be onto something with the content in a note. At the start I copied and pasted a bunch of stuff (upcoming assignments etc) which had some complex formatting. However it’s not just affecting that, but every note in the folder. The one I was typing in a moment ago is only a few lines of plain text.
There are 27 notes in that folder.

Are you syncing the notes to anywhere else? Let’s say notes up on MacBook and in iPad, could start syncing while you are typing.
